6th gen. I really don't care about graphics in most games up to a point. 6th gen was when graphics got good enough for games to not be a sore for the eyes, but graphics were still not the main focus of every game like they seem to be today. Some may say wii, but imo other than mario galaxy, the gamecube had a superior version of every single wii sequel to a gamecube game. I  can easily replay my favorite games from the 6th gen. Playing most older games on consoles on a TV just feels weird and nausiating nowadays(Portables with their small screens allow me not to be bothered by older games on the gameboy and gameboy advance).

The best gen to me was the fourth...the "war" between the SNES and Genesis was too epic and awesome...now, almost two decades later, and looking back, all the 'battles' in the 5th, 6th and current generations have nothing on the epicness that was the SNES vs Genesis.

Only those who were gaming during those times truly understand what I´m talking about here.

I still remember how awesome it was when I saw F-Zero and its 'Mode 7' graphics for the first time 'LOOK AT THOSE GRAPHICS!!!'

I LOVE ICELAND!

For PC and handhelds, fifth was an amazing time. The best games of all time Pokemon, and Starcraft were released, as well as Age of Empires II, Empire Earth, Dungeon keeper, C&C, C&C Red Alert, Tiberian Sun, Warcraft II (or was that too early), Heroes of Might and Magic III, Oddworld Abe's Odyssey, Croc 1 and 2, Half Life, Falllout 1 and 2.

For consoles, 16.bit era, easily. PC also had the best games Epic Megagames has ever made, Jazz Jackrabbit and Jazz Jackrabbit 2 during this time.

I LOVE ICELAND!

For me the 3rd gen was the best, even though I only really cared about the NES. The NES reinvigorated home console gaming after the great crash of '83/'84 and the level of innovation at the time in games like Super Mario Bros and The Legend of Zelda proved to me that home gaming was sure to be a permanent form of entertainment.

The 4th gen is a close second though (loved the SNES and Genesis), followed by this gen (7th) and last gen (6th) pretty much tied for third.

The 1st and 2nd gen are definitely dead last.

Easily this gen, specifically the PS3 and Xbox 360. Both of these consoles offer great exclusives, but the things that really make them great is the 3rd party support. Every year, there's 10-15 excellent games for me.

This also has been the first gen to really push online gaming.

Also, with online gaming, gamers can get plenty of digital games and indie games.

All those together trumps the other gens IMO.

For me, it would be the 5th generation.

In particular, 1998 was the peak of gaming. I will list some of the following games to demonstrate my point:

-Resident Evil 2

-Panzer Dragoon Saga

-Xenogears

-Parasite Eve

-Starcraft

-Banjo-Kazooie

-Metal Gear Solid

-Spyro the Dragon

-Fallout 2

-Grim Fandango

-Turok 2

-Half Life

-Ocarina of Time

-Starcraft: Brood War

-Baldur's Gate

-Suikoden II

-Sonic Adventure

And I'm sure other people could list dozens of other great games, like Unreal and Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. That year alone makes it my favorite generation.

For me it's 5th Gen. My first generation of games, and had some of my favs like Gran Turismo, Crash Bandicoot and the NHL series.

5th.............

Platforming heaven with the likes of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, Castle of Illusion: Starring Mickey Mouse, Kid Chameleon, Revenge of Shinobi, Quackshot........ the liest goes on and on.

Side scrolling beat em' up delights like Streets of Rage 2 & 3, Final Fight 1 & 2, Golden Axe, The Punisher, Battletoads ect.

And of course it was the height of the 1 on 1 fighter era, i paid well over the odds for an import copy of Street Fighter 2 for my Super Nintendo Entertainment System back in the day, and it was worth every penny, playing near arcade perfect games on your console was a mindblowing prospect during those times.

Then there was of course all the Street Fighter 2 Updates, Mortal Kombat 1, 2, 3 & Ultimate, Killer Instinct, Eternal Champions ect.

And Finally there was the racing genre............ i used to have sooooooooooo much fun playing the likes of Micro Machines 2: Turbo Tournament (up to 8 people could play on the same Sega Mega Drive without an adaptor, again, mindblowing at the time), then there was the almighty Mario Kart (oh what fun we had on that) and Road Rash 2.

Not just good times............ exceptional times, aaahhhhhhhhhh.

That's the 4th not 5th man

SEGA mega Drive and Super Famicom)SNES) are 4th

Easily the 5th gen! Between the N64 & PS1, nothing has topped that (yet). The PS3 is quickly gaining ground for me, however!
