Forums - Sony - What Does Sony Need To Do To Beat X360 In America.

I Still Dont get it, 2011 was perhaps the PS3's biggest year yet. As far as exclusives and features goes, Sony has ALWAYS beaten the X360 in these categories and 2011 was no exception. Uncharted 3, Killzone 3, Infamous 2, LittleBigplanet 2, Resistance 3, So Many Exclusives in 1 year and yet it still was not enough to get the american gamers attetion...

I think Sony either Needs to spend More money on marketing or rebrand the PS3 competly (atleast in america) to try to appel to american gamers. Or atleast try to make the PS3 Look/sound like a better deal then the 360. I mean for $249.99, The PS3 is easily the bigger bang for your buck as far as quality is concerned. Not trying to bash the 360 or anything, It just amazies me how the 360 is still outselling the PS3 by more than double the amount in america when the 250gb model is still $299.99...

What do yall think Sony Could do to aleast try to compete with the X360 this year in America??

A miracle.

EDIT: Okay to expand my thoughts...

PS3 cannot win with price.

Sony had all the software hits they could've possibly released in 2011, and they still lost; even to the Wii at times.

That is exactly what i dont understand either.

Sony threw out pratically ever big franchise they had in 2011 and they even dropped the price to $249.99 but they still came up short.  :(

Makes me wonder if most americans even care for the PS3...

The'll never "win" N.A with PS3, it's impossible.
With PS4 they may have a small chance, but I still doubt it. To have a chance with PS4 they need:
- To release it before (unlikely) Nextbox or only 1-4 months after Nextbox (likely).
- A massive AD campaign
- Brilliant launch line-up with multiple system-sellers, I think this is likely, Uncharted, Gran turismo (more popular in EU/J but whatever), God of war, Next guerilla IP to name a few could all be launch titles or very close, + plenty of multiplats.
- As well as more marketing, BETTER marketing. Put focus on games and the fact that it's exclusive, describe what the console does and what it does that nextbox/wiiU can't, make it attractive.
- Similar price to Nextbox, within $50 range.

If they do all of this they have a chance.
If Microsoft fuck up they have a good chance.

It's not possible anymore since most are already connected on xbox live in the states.
It doesn't matter what the ps3 offers, if all your friends are on live your choice is already made.

Having a paid service keeps your customers loyal, you're less likely to switch over if you've already paid for live for the year. Maybe after another price cut it will become affordable enough as a secondary console, for when your family is watching tv on your 360 :)

Adopt more with western style theme starting with the elimination of that stupid gay ass "pley-istesyon robot anime girl at the end of every advert?

360 exclusives appeal to Americans more. Kinect was really a game changer on top of that. Word of mouth and people buying whatever their friends have must have an impact as well.

The way you talk makes it seem like you haven't considered that maybe the gen will just end with Sony behind MS in America.

To beat the 360 in America Sony needs to drop the price of the PS3 to $150 or lower, advertise like mad (especially advertising for PSN and Move), make their UI more user friendly and flashy looking and possibly snag a huge exclusive like COD.

Two Reasons:

One that's about the 360. Live. IMHO games did not give the 360 the lead in US (although they helped, particularly Halo and Gears - but Xbox showed you could sell 10 million plus Halos and still only get 20 million consoles sold) but Live and being miles ahead of Sony in providing a PC quality online experience did. MS knew there would be a big and growing market for console/online gaming in US and got themselves set up to support it way ahead of Sony.

By the time PSN caught up and PS3 had more exclusives coming out it was already all over. 360 had the market-share and mind-share for online gaming. Just because Killzone was higher resolution than Halo was irrelevant. The key was the online service not the game on it's own.

Second that's about the Wii. While Sony was so busy trying to bring PSN up to speed for online and pump out gritty titles to combat the 360 appeal to young males in US, the Wii came in and snapped up the casual gaming demographic that Sony had enjoyed with the PS2 (a demographic Sony obviously expected to gain a much bigger chunk of to give them the edge over MS). Again, by the time Sony belatedly got more family friendly stuff out it was too late - they'd lost the market to their old foe Nintendo while fighting a different battle with MS. TBH given the Wii's unexpected hit with motion controls there was little Sony could do.

The result is the PS3 is behind and will now stay behind in US most likely.

If Sony had got PSN up to speed a lot faster, and got cross-chat in place while they still had time early in the gen they might have managed to keep the gap narrower, and if they'd managed to hold onto more of the casual market by having a focus on family games (and got Move out earlier) then things might have been different - but they didn't and it's all "What Ifs..." now.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
