PS3 exclusives have adequate legs. Just look at M.A.G. It's not exactly a 'great' game yet it's hit 1million units sold I believe.

Last Guardian isn't really more of a new IP then Dark souls is. I think it's got some extra selling power from Shadow of the Collosus though probably not as much as something with the 2 at the end (do people just grab whatever that's familar on the shelf...)

My post wasn't really serious but I'd say you're too high with TLG & too low on TLOU. |
im surprised you still respond to him.

Sales equals winner and loser. It determines developer support. But mostly, it determines relevance. It shows you what gamers care about, separating the useless internet hype from people who are actually willing to part with money. Notice how none of this concerns actual quality. But to me, relevance > quality. If you have both, your all set. |
ya that is true but people act like 1 million is bad when its not. Thats what im really trying to say. Normally if an exclusive gets to 1 million, there will more than likely be a sequel. I also see a lot of 360 and ps3 fans act like if a game does not sell 2 million or more its considered a flop. That just makes me so mad when people can't just get over that not all games are huge hits like call of duty, and are still very good games.
BTW, id rather have quality over relevence because i don't want to play a shit game just because 10 million people do too. I want my games to be worth every penny i pay. But you are correct in that if a game does not sell well the sequel will be horrible or most likely won't exist.

My post wasn't really serious but I'd say you're too high with TLG & too low on TLOU. Also, I don't understand all this talk about new IPs being doomed to being low selling titles. If a game like Red Dead Redemption (I know it's not a new IP, but in terms of selling power, the franchise was just as insignificant as one) can sell well towards 10 million, then I'd say it's feasible for another new IP of equal quality to reach the 3-5mill range. The only reason we haven't seen that recently is simply because most major developers have already created their new IPs for this gen and are sticking to them. Most new IPs nowadays don't sell simply because they are bad, or unappealing games. Think of some more high-quality AND appealing new IPs released recently, and I'm sure they've sold well also. LA Noire, for example, was a pretty good game, and has some pretty good sales (though bad for the company). The problem is there aren't that many games like this. But not due to consumers ignoring new IPs, it's because most great devs are sticking to their already established franchises. That's where I believe games like TLOU will differ.. As long as they deviate from the common trend of new IPs, and be actual good & appealing, then I think they'll see some healthy sales |
Games need massive amounts of advertising to crack 3 mil or even more. Red dead had a massive amount of advertising, quality does play a part but not nearly as much as it should. As long as a game has high production values and is advertised alot it can get a ton of sales despite the actual quality. Personally I prefer the good resonably budget model that actually rely on quality rather then advertisement and don't need massive amount of sales to profit.

| Jay520 said: Well yeah, but if a new IP, or any game, is top quality (90+) & appealing then it's likely to automatically have a sufficient promotion if the publisher is competent. (Though I think some games can accomplish this without massive advertisement. Batman Arkham Asylum (2009) being a non-too recent example). |
Batman Arkham Aslylum had a fair amount of advertising, true not quite halo or red dead levels but a fair amount. Though if the game wasn't as good as it was it wouldn't do those numbers. Any more advertising then that is just excessive in my mind, I hate the fact bad games can sell on advertisement alone.
