I rather liked how Witcher 2 did this a bit better. Instead of giving us two sides that are really easy to hate, the two sides in Witcher 2 were extremely sympathetic for different reasons, and the more you got to know them the more human they became, rather than less.

Point is the Stormcloaks make me miss Iorveth.

I disagree.  I think having two sides that are both hateable is great.  Because it puts you in a great dilema where you might decide neither even though there are rewards to be had.

It reminds me of playing an RPG where you spend the first 75% of the game saving the Princess who was your girlfriend, from the evil empire... but then when you get her back.... she's fallen in love with another guy!

Plus, that other guy works best in a group with your main character, making your main character more effective too!

It's a great kick in the gut and expectations to where your suddenly the demotivated angry leader of a rebel army seeing something through just because you've come so far.

I'm just saying that in Witcher 2, both sides were full of terrible people that I still managed to like.

Except the Nilfgaardians. Screw those guys.

Have to say the Imperials seem to be making the best arguments on here.
- Have already paid them good money for houses
- Keeps the Thalmor out of Skyrim
- Stormcloaks saying they would have liked to join the Imperials

As for the High Elves, I will need some way to raise my bounty in the jarldoms for the wanted trophy...

All of this and my character is an Imperial, and I didn't really want to be a turncoat, makes me think the legion may be the best choice although I will be selling myself out to the 1%.

There's a dirt cheap way of doing this. Get the Storm Call shout, use it in any major city, instant 1000 bounty

I also THINK, I got 1000 bounty for turning into a warewolf just outside of Whiterun, but I can't really remember

Werewolf transformation also nets you 1000 bounty if you do it inside a city, I did forget that one XD.

You can also just kill 1 gaurd in each city as that will net you 1,000 bounty.

Imperials because they remind me more of Oblivion. Plus they made the Stormcloaks really really unsympathetic.

Stormcloaks, why would I help the motherfuckers that tried to cut off my head at the start? I mercilessly kill any and all Imperial Legion troops I see.

Yeah! what this guy said.

As a High Elf, it should be my duty to join the imperials. As a rebel at heart, I wanted to join the Stormcloaks and I also think that we elves are stuck up in our beliefs of the absolution of our religion. This High elf is an atheist though and thinks all religions deserve a chance. So far I purposely have taken neither side because it would affect too many side missions. In the end, being a rebel always wins for me so I will join the stormcloaks.

I love that shout. I already had it before I went up to see the Greybeards. When they wanted to teach me the sprint shout outside (which I also already had) I figured, here I'll show you something cool. Then all of them got repeatedly struck down by lightning. They completely ignored it ofcourse like it was the most normal thing in the world, just cowered for 2 seconds when they ran out of health.

I never bothered with the wanted trophy. The game kept locking out fast travel even though I was far away from the guards that were pursuing me, with the only choice to head back and reset the bounty. (They weren't pursuing me at all, just waiting for me to come back) Even killing every killable person in town was not enough.

Potion of invisibility for 60 seconds + 100 sneak = Even with 1000 bounty, guards will ignore you after they give up searching for you.

At least that was how I got mine. You could ride your horse between Jarldoms, but that would take an extremely long time >_>.

Everyone in Skyrim seems to be a complete jerk. Especially the children...

But yes, I just chose a side (Imperials) because I wanted to do some compelling side-quests. One of the issues I have with this game is that being a "good guy" leaves with you with a much less compelling game. Want to put an end to the Dark Brotherhood instead of joining them? Cool, it's only one mission (compared to the whole quest tree if you join them)! Want to stop the corruption of Riften and put the Thieves Guild out of business for good? Well... you can't really do that!

At least there's the Companions and the College...

Also, my brother just started playing (Dark Elf/Mage) and told me he wanted to join the Stormcloaks. I laughed and told him to visit Windhelm before he made any decisions.

What are you exactly discussing here, the trophy where you need a 1000 bounty in all cities right? Why do you mention riding, why can't you just fast travel to all the cities and murder everyone you see? (I havent tried to get this Trophy yet)
