I loved this game as a child and I'm replaying it now. Addictive doesn't describe the game, it's just fantastic

For the Mario Kart Debate
You know what, everyone has their own preference. There was a thread with voting for the best Mario Kart and it's a pretty close tie between Mario Kart 64, Wii, DS and 7. SNES was up there too, and DD wasn't too far off. The only really low scoring one was Super Circuit.
I personally love the N64 because of the track selection and because I don't feel the gameplay has evolved since that game. Also everything is unlockable with 2 players.
Mario Kart Wii would have gone up several spaces if all bonus material could have been unlocked with 2 players. Customizable 4 race runs is nice, but it's annoying not having all the karts some of my friends do.
Mario Kart DS could have been my favorite, I really love the tracks, but again no 2 player GP, and it's a handheld game. Mario Kart is best on a big screen so people can yell at it.
That said, I still play Mario Kart 64 today, as much as I play the Wii one in fact.

17. Forza Motorsort 3
To me, this is the definitive racing sim. Yes GT5 and Forza 4 have better physics, and both games have more cars, but this game had the best selection of cars. It had Porsche, and I know that's a bizzare first compliment to give a game, but damn Porsche is my favorite car company and it's a pain in the ass that EA keeps them from the great sims of today.
However outside of Porsche, this was also the most in depth sim at the time, and wasn't surpased in quality, even by GT5, until Forza 4 released in 2011. This game had high resolution graphics with an interior car view on all 400 cars in the game. The distribution of cars was excellent between manufacturer, and heck there are some great cars in this game I was not aware of before. The only car I feel this game needs, but lacks, is the Ariel Atom, but I bet if they rendered that exposed car in this game, the 360 would crash. Regardless, this game had over 100 hours of play, and every race was unique. Some races involved GT3 cup cars, some limited you to American 2 seaters, some limited you to ricers, but every race was different. So different, you almost never raced in the same car twice unless it was the fastest car you had in it's class. This game offered the complete experience for any sim racers, and yes I have 1,000/1,000 in this game. Took over 100 hours, but it was well worth it. This is the only sim I ever got 100% completion on, and to be honest, it's the only one worth playing that much of (Sims take longer to complete then the longest RPGs!).
This really was the racing sim where you got to drive your dream cars, and because of that, this game crushes GT3 (my favorite GT, for the same reasons, a complete package at the time). Best sim ever made IMO, it was a huge leap in sim quality and graphics at the time, and it offers the most complete package because of Porsche.
P.S. Making my list this year, I think Gran Turismo 3 and 5 should have made my top 50. GT3 was the first racing sim that I really got into, and it did the same for me this game did nearly a decade earlier. Next years list will be a bit different.

17. Batman: Arkham Asylum (PS3)
Before Batman: Arkham Asylum came along, superhero games had been mostly terrible for quite some time. As such, I really wasn't expecting this to be any good. I tried the demo out of curiosity, and was stunned at how good it was. All of a sudden, it became a game I had to buy, but I still had my concerns about whether they could make the full game into something special or if the demo was just a one shot wonder. As it turned out, they more than delivered. Here we have a game where the sense of being Batman was delivered spectacularly. You sneak through the shadows of the asylum, and then when you enter a room full of enemies, you can hide on gargoyles while planning a pattern of attack, before swooping down and taking them out one by one. Their growing sense of terror as their numbers dwindled just added to the immersion. The combat was simple yet satisfying, and the Riddler challenges added that little something extra to the game. The only flaw was that you never really got to use Batman's gliding capabilities for any extended period of time, but that's something that would be rectified a couple of years later...
VGChartz
To horn in on the Mario Kart debate, i have 64 listed at the top of my own, but that's because Kart 64 was the 2nd game i ever owned, and one of the games that got me into gaming in the first place (i was a late bloomer in that regard. Up until age 9 i thought video games were moronic, and then my cousin bought an N64...) so i give it a lot of nostalgia leeway because it looms so large in my own imagination, but it is painfully clear that it is the objectively inferior game compared to those that came after it, though it was the more egregious rubberband AI that always got me, Rol and TwRoo have made good arguments against it as well
Though i disliked Super Mario Kart, from what i played of its tracks in Super Circuit, anyway, but that's also part of my bias from having started with Kart 64...
I dragged NSMBWii down to number 17. Had it a bit further up my list before i reconsidered

Hey what's with all Rainbow Road (MK64) hate around here? It's my favorite track in ALL mario kart's games :D (altough didn't played MK DS) The music on that track can't compete with anything. Wario Stadium on the other part...

The track is incredibly long and boring, that's a deadly combination. Also, Rainbow Road is supposed to be one of the tracks that really test your skills (it's the final course of each game, after all) and MK64's RR completely fails at that. Well, there are chomps you come across like every 20 seconds, but it's still a joke. |
Well it was long and easy, so I'll give you that, but It's still my favorite track :P
Anyway I updated my list a little
#21:Monster Rancher 2(PSX): The best monster rancher game ever, and one of my favorite monster breeding games. Tons of things to do, with a lot of secret monster to get, and the ever original system to create a monster based on ANY CD you had. I spent dozens of hours trying all my music/games cd's to see which monster had.
#20:Pokemon Red/Blue(GB): The best best best BEST pokemon game ever, it has a lot of less things than newer pokemon games, but anyway the first generation of Pokémon where the best and yes I know nostalgia plays a huge part in this, but nobody can deny this game exceeeds originality and it's incredibly fun.
#19:Resident Evil : Nemesis(PSX) : The best resident evil of the saga. I beat this game like 10 times and never got tired of it. Furthermore I love Jill and Nemesis and it had that mercenaries game that was so incredibly addictive (ok, it wasn't addictive but the prizes were so neat it made you to play until you bleed)
#18:Sim City 3000(PC) : One of the best Sim City out there, the difficulty was somewhat balanced (not like SC4) , the implementation of hearing what the citizens has to say was very welcomed, and the music was truly amazing. I love this game, and even today I think it looks better than Sim City 4 :P

The challenge of 64's rainbow road is that that's the one track where the rubberband AI hits you at its absolute worst. I've come in 2nd and third in that race through absolutely no fault of my own, just that you are neck-and-neck to the point where it's indistinguishable, since there is just no way to divert the CPU

I agree, MK64's Rainbow Road is my favorite, but to be honest I can't remember MKDS's RR.
Wait you hate Wario Stadium? That's my favorite Mario Kart Track of all time. That and Bowsers Castle (Star cup had it all).

My two favorite action/adventures of this generation are coming up for #18 and #17... well that would be true, but Skyward Sword has taken that crown pretty easily thus far. Too bad it's a November release.
And Mario Kart will forever be srs business.
@Michael
Wario Stadium isn't my favorite course... but I have to admit that there's little out there that's better than hitting someone with a lightning bolt just as they're about to hit the jump.
