Forums - Gaming - Gears of War 3 raising standards for third person shooters?

I don't think Gears has brought anything new to the table. But it has polished and popularised great mechanics and game modes that already existed though.

I don't see it influencing other games that much though, most 3rd person shooters have their own style and haven't really copied any aspects from Gears of War. Developers only seem to copy eachother when it comes to First Person Shooters.

gears of war  is the most influencial shooter this gen. No arguments.

I would say Call Of Duty has been far, far more influential.

Gears "popularized" cover and survival mode and therefore did influence other games. I'm not getting into arguments about who had stuff first as anyone with a fair knowledge of games history will know few of the mechanics of Gears were original. What Epic did was polish, blend and meld a mix of proven and less proven mechanics and made them popular.

All popular games influence other games. For example the critical success of Uncharted 2 in terms of SP narrative and writing clearly influenced the improvements in Gears 3 SP narrative.

Most games are trying to be popular, and they therefore happily crib for any other source or title.

I doubt Gears influenced Uncharted directly though, they were both too far into development for that and early on it was clear both would feature cover based shooting, but the "vibe" of Gears visible during development coupled with the success of Halo and similar titles clearly influenced Sony's desire to have games that were less whimsical and more grounded, and this obviously had an impact on Uncharted's tone for example.

Gameplay wise though they are clearly different and I doubt for example Uncharted has cover based shooting because Gears did.

I read in a post serveral years ago saying that Naughty dog saw Gears of war demo years back in 2005, they said they got the idea from epic to make it cover system

your opinion, imo games had them before gears and would have continued to incorporate them regardless of if gears existed or not

Well do me a favor.  Humor me.  Gears 2 brought the Horde in November 2008.  Which game had an online team of five (give or take) working together to survive an ever increasing group of enemies that grow stronger and stronger as the level increases.  Teamwork is the key--comuincating with your friends, distributing weapons, and leveling up are also important.

Maybe some games got the mode because it was popular in Gears 2.  Maybe some games (ie: Call of Duty World at War) were going to have them, anyway.  It's a simple theme, actually.  Any one of us could have come up with it.  But which game had it before Gears?

wow i really don't believe that people think that coop gameplay against waves of enemies is something new these types of gameplay have been around since the first consoles were out

L4D got survival mode after Gears.  That Doom video was from the multi-player campaign.  That AVP video--I could be wrong but it just looked like some kind of death match using bots.  Never heard of it, though so I could be wrong.  Still, you have to use a loooooot of imagination to say that is like Horde mode.  And The Outfit was just four player campaign, too (and it's a strategy game).

But you are sorta right.  I remember having Spawn on the Dreamcast and it was basically team up to kill a group of enemies in an arena.  It sucked hard, though.  I'll look at it like this:  Mario wasn't the first platformer but it was the first platformet to do the genre justice.  As a result, it spawned a billion 2D knockoffs.  Gears is the finest implementation of a "Horde Mode" compared to anything before it.  In a way, it's just an online team death match vs. some incredibly varied AI controlled opponents.  So there.

"L4D got survival mode after Gears"

l4d was released just a few days after gears but true

"you have to use a loooooot of imagination to say that is like Horde mode"

how many games can you name that have modes that are exactly like the one in gears? usually when games are inspired by other games they take certain elements and put their own unique twist on the original formula... so i was never going to be able to mention games that have idenical modes to gears just similar ones

"Gears is the finest implementation of a "Horde Mode""

your opinion

Got a link?  Could be true but I'd be surprised if so early in a games development someone said something like that - cribbing goes on all the time but its rare you'd annouce very early in your titles development that you were directly lifting something from another game still in development itself.

EDIT:

Searching myself I can see no sign of such a claim but I did find this from an IGN interview which seems to confirm that ND were working off the same source as Epic - i.e. kill-switch - and that they were reacting to the overall title rather than focusing on a specific mechanic:

EGM: So, how much did Gears of War influence Uncharted's development?

Evan Wells: Certainly we all playe
d Gears of War and liked it. It set a bar visually that we knew we wanted to compete with.... As far as gameplay, I think I've heard them cite the same game that put us on this path: kill.switch. Gears of War obviously took that to another level, and again, that level of polish helped push us

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

cool, do you have a link for the rest of that email.

also if what that guy said was true, that ND in 2005, said that, then that was before the game was ever publicly announced (i think)
