Forums - Gaming - Gears of War 3 raising standards for third person shooters?

I didn't play CoD WaW (Zombie mode) nor did I play Left 4 Dead but Wikipedia shows that L4D didn't get a "Horde Mode" until it got 2009 DLC. Also, Gears released a few days before CoD WaW so, if we're being technical, Gears of War did have the mode, first. Also, the OP asked about third person shooters. L4D and CoD are first person.

I'm just saying .......

Gears of war may have that mode but a lot of games had that mode. Its not really something special, its just an arcade version of the single player campaign and a lot of games have it. Those were the games on top of my mind. I don't even know which game had survival mode first, but its definitely not gears of war.

The whole left 4 dead game itself is like a horde mode, but you keep moving. In survival you stay at one point and there's no end I think.

What about this? Resident Evil 4 raising standards for 3rd person shooters.
The only new thing on GoW is cover system. But overall? I don't know if another games did cover system first. Graphic? Hmmm... Uncharted had more better graphic than gow.

yes games from years back like killswitch have cover systems

Hey, i loved that game.

Really underrated & under-appreciated game.

from the replies i'm seeing people in this thread still don't appreciate it...

and actually somehow believe gears is doing something original

^^The hooked a chainsaw up to a machine gun. That's sorta original, right?

that was exaggeration, every game to some extent has unique qualities whether it be as you mentioned strapping chainsaws to guns in gears, or its beast mode or whatever but creditting major features like cover and survival modes to gears is imo nonsense as other games had those features long before it and implemented them well

LOL the killswitch cover designer works for Epic now since 2000 something, he helped Gears of war cover system

I didn't know that!! Thats great.

I always thought of Gears as the perfect realization of KS

I know right, if anything there should be a killswitch remake.

other game smay have had them before, but now you need these modes to compete because of gears. i think it shows how all of these games have this now and only one or two before. Gears may not have created them, but they sure as heck made them mainstream and made them well.

your opinion, imo games had them before gears and would have continued to incorporate them regardless of if gears existed or not

Mhm, maybe Gears has horde mode, because today every game has horde mode. Why should you think the other way around? It's one of the most simple mode ever created, heck Asteroids is a horde mode game!

As side note, to all those saying that Uncharted was a Fantasy game: none said that, it was a game with a fantasy setting, like in fantasy vs. reality, ESP powers/superpowers/seers&mediums vs. real stuff (e.g. Infamous is fantasy, Ratchet is fantasy, Uncharted is not).

Hm, so it did. CGIQuality lied to me.....

I am the Playstation Avenger.

Gears "popularized" cover and survival mode and therefore did influence other games. I'm not getting into arguments about who had stuff first as anyone with a fair knowledge of games history will know few of the mechanics of Gears were original. What Epic did was polish, blend and meld a mix of proven and less proven mechanics and made them popular.

All popular games influence other games. For example the critical success of Uncharted 2 in terms of SP narrative and writing clearly influenced the improvements in Gears 3 SP narrative.

Most games are trying to be popular, and they therefore happily crib for any other source or title.

I doubt Gears influenced Uncharted directly though, they were both too far into development for that and early on it was clear both would feature cover based shooting, but the "vibe" of Gears visible during development coupled with the success of Halo and similar titles clearly influenced Sony's desire to have games that were less whimsical and more grounded, and this obviously had an impact on Uncharted's tone for example.

Gameplay wise though they are clearly different and I doubt for example Uncharted has cover based shooting because Gears did.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
