Resistance also shows the change in direction where Insomniac went from a cartoony wimsical style to make a gritty shooter for launch, same with sucker punch who went from cartoony Sly to Infamous. But obviusly not all studios were put on gritty "realistic" styled games there are some exeptions but they are mostly on PSP, established successful franchises, bassed in Japan or designed outside of SONY's influince before being picked up (heavanly sword, heavy rain, Heavenly Sword etc) but the majority of Sony owned (or seccond party with strong ties) studios did do a 180 late last gen or this gen to be grittier and/or more realistic looking and that is a fact. That takes nothing away from the quality of the games tho |

Which one was wipeout again? plus the series didn't even start at Sony bad example |
I was thinking more along the lines of the article mentioning all Sony studios being pushed to a more realistic games because of 360 success of gritty shooters. WipeOut HD is neither realistic or gritty.
F-Zero is far from realistic. And Sony Liverpool (Psygnosis) are still a Sony studio unless you've heard otherwise.
Oh and the top one.
Hmm, pie.

So out of all of Sony's IP's, only 3 of them were influenced by Xbox's 'gritty shooters'. Infamous, Uncharted, & Resistance. Misleading thread title. |
No of the Sony first/seccond party developed and released titles this generation
War/starhawk
MotorStorm
M.A.G
Modnation Racers
LittleBigPlanet
Infamous
Resistance
Uncharted
EYE pet
4 are ‘realistic’ games in terms of how it was modeled and rendered (human charcters that look realistic) and/or are gritty in nature plus 5/6 (deepending how you split the ...hawk games) can be classified as shooters and 2 of the remainder are racers and one started life outside of Sony so was not influinced by their damnds and one was developed to push a peripheral. And that covers all western studios that develop AAA games.
A case for War/Starhawk and Motorstorm being 'realistic' looking could be made as well.
But the real funny thing is Sony ended up with more titles than Microsoft did lol.

All studios that develop AAA titles at Sony have made a 'realistic' or gritty game this gen tho...
Also you only know that because the HUD and the widescreen
P.S. Psygnosis wasn't when they started the Wipeout franchise back on the PSX, Sega Saturn and PC back in 1995 and as such it's style was already established before the directive.

I've never heard the term "gritty shooter" mentioned so much in seven short paragraphs. Also, how is Uncharted realistic?

You telling me WipeOut HD isn't AAA? I think it's one of the best games this gen. :(
I can tell WipeOut when I see it. If it were just 2 pictures of tracks maybe it might be a bit harder. And as Psygnosis developed WipeOut before they got bought out, Sony didn't copy anyone in that case, Psygnosis did. But then if no one copied anyone in this industry we'd have about 15 games rotating every year based on a certain genre, one of those genres being Chess.
Hmm, pie.

Completely underserved... People have said much more explicit things, much worse than that. We don't even know who he was referring to, XBox fans or the general XBox public. The Xbox doesn't only have shooters you know?! |
Well, I certainly don't mind this. Uncharted came out to be a beast and I'm not sure if a fantasy type of uncharted would have been good, as talented as ND is. Of course, if they came out with a darker version of jak this gen, that would be pretty kick ass, a mix of gritty 3rd person shooter/adventure with a bit of that fantasy world from jak we know and love.
