Forums - Sony - Is playstation MOVE being discontinued?

Honestly I think Move being dropped and motion controls being dropped from Sony's systems in the future would be wise for Sony. Right now they can choose to directly compete with Nintendo or Microsoft or both. But if Sony returns to classic controllers only with PS4 they would have a massive advantage.

Microsoft has stated Kinect is the future and any future X-Box will definitely support a Kinect like device. Microsoft saw enough success with Kinect to justify making it standard in the next X-Box. Even though the devices sales have dropped very low after initial release software sales remain impressive enough and Microsoft seems to think Kinect is the future.

Nintendo also thinks motion controls are still the future. With WiiU it would appear they are dropping classic control's. Many would argue the WiiU controller is classic but lets face it, the screen in the middle makes the controller unique and a lot different to play on. Also since you will be required to use a Wiimote for any title offering 2 or more players we can see most games will still have a huge focus on motion controls.

Both Nintendo and Microsoft will spend a lot of money, time and resources making sure Kinect and WiiU get their share of the market. But this leaves a huge gap for Sony to exploit. What about those tens of millions of gamers who prefer classic controls? Sure Nex-Box will likely still have a classic controller but Microsoft's focus is on motion controls and its dividing their support for classic controls. Sony could exploit this by creating a classic style console with similar or superior graphical power and processing capabilities then Nintendo WiiU or Nex-Box for a lower price. While the WiiU controller will cost Nintendo a small fortune to put in with each console and Kinect's camera which will no doubt be improved and more expensive costing Microsoft. Sony could create a power house for the same price, instead of investing in an expensive control device Sony could focus all that money on making their console state of the art.

Or Sony could launch a PS4 with similar power to Nex-Box/WiiU and make more profit due to the lack of the expensive control device. Either way I think its in Sony's best interest to leave motion controls to Nintendo and Microsoft and instead focus on their established classic user base!

this makes no sense at all. How in the hell does taking away features give them an advantage?? The only person who would have the advantage is the competition(you'd like that wouldnt you?) What about the millions of gamers who prefer classic controls? what a silly question, they will do what there doing right now use a damn classic controller. Just like the xbox users and Wii users use(for the most part). Or here a better idea, the camera that Sony uses is cheap as hell as is the controllers, they already stated that they make profit on everyone sold. So all they have to do is build a stronger camera in the PS4 and still have there funky Move control thing. There classic user base?! What the hell do you think they have been doing, your acting like they are making a bunch of Move only games.

Yah because I really hate Sony, I mean I only bought a PS3 and PSP I must really want to see them go down. Saving up money for a Vita but you know what I want them dead, pre-ordered Twisted Metal and StarHawk but you know what Sony should go to hell.

Honestly Oniyide where do you get off talking such smack. Yes Sony isn't my favorite game company but I would never wish harm upon them unless they monopolized the industry and threatened to drive Nintendo or Microsoft out of business. I enjoy products from all three platforms and seeing any of them go down or hurt is not in my best interest as a gamer. I used to be a Nintendo loyalist but over the years have become a gamer. I hold no loyalty to any of the companies anymore and while I still prefer certain games over others I feel that I should have all three primary platforms.

In fact I bought my PS3 and PSP years ago. I have spent hundreds of dollars on Sony first and third party games. You just want to stereotype me and call me a fan boy. Sorta weird since anytime I say anything against Sony on the Sony board I get called a Nintendo fan boy. When I say something against Nintendo on the Nintendo board suddenly I'm a Sony fan boy. Get a grip I can have an opinion without being a fan boy!

Yah Sony is making a profit. But if you want to play Move for the whole experience it costs like 100$ you need to buy the camera you need the Nav you need the Move. In PS4 I think Sony should stick with the classic controller rather then bundle in Move or another motion based device.

If Move continues on PS4 it shouldn't be given much priority. Sony should focus on the gamers who like classic controllers because guess what their will be a big market for it. With Microsoft shifting a lot of internal development to Kinect and Nintendo supporting motion based controls and WiiU's controller. Sony has an opportunity to lead unchallenged pretty much.

If Sony releases say 20 classic controller games compared to Microsoft releasing 8 and then 10+ Kinect titles and Nintendo releasing almost entirely motion based games. Who are the old school gamers going to gravitate too? The PS4 obviously and that would give Sony an advantage!

Also don't say I hate motion controls either since I got my Wii day one and still play motion based games. However with Microsoft and Nintendo both focusing so largely on motion based controls Sony has an opportunity to attract those classic gamers.

I tried the move once at the store. I thought it was kind of dumb.

It is.  I think the sale ends the 2nd of Oct.  So, the Move is definitely not being discontinued.  Here's my thread on the topic: http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=134173&page=1

Although, I think it would be smart for Sony to at least lower the price of all Move accessories by ~$10-$15 permanently.  This would boost sales quite a bit and probably still make them a good amount of profit.

It would only boost sales slightly and temporarily. Price isn't the problem, people just don't want the Move.

The best games that use Move also use a joystick. The Move required games are mediocre. My guess is Sony will just let it fade into obscurity or maybe create a camera like Kinect that works with it.

Um what lol, it sold half as much as kinect with 1/10th the advertisement, and it's also the highest selling pheriphiral Sony has every released and is making them a profit. Also the best move games can also use a joystick yes, but the best kinect games (or rather only ones that work) you can't even make your character move in a direction and aren't very good. Also Sony has a camera like kinect, and it is part of move, there's the camera and the wand and the option nav controller, you obviously don't know what you are talking about.

Sony hasn't really lost any focus on the standard controller anyways and unlike wii and kinect move can actually play controller games well so in theory the wouldn't even have to make dedicated move games to continue to support and sell move and instead just have it as another kind of controller.

OK, OK, fair enough, I apoligize for my outburst, but like the other guy said, they dont have to focus on Move next gen, they can continue to use it as a suplement. having the camera buitl in the system, will cut cost considerably less for them and consumers. IMHO they could and will focus on classic control, they are doing that already, none of their big games are MOve only. Sony is not dumb, they cant win that fight, and the Move only games are inexpensive to make anyway, cheaper than Kinect only games.

But whats the size of the userbase? People only need one Kinect so the Kinect userbase is 10 million plus. Which is a decent size audience and the reason Kinect gets support.

Now you say the Move sold half as many units. But we don't know the actual userbase size. I would presume many people bought multiple Move controllers because several games require two. There are also those who purchased maybe 3 or 4. So what can the userbase of Move actually be? 2 - 3 million?

Doesen't matter what you think about Kinect nor do I need an explanation of the Move. Ultimately, the masses chose Kinect over Move and it has done a significantly better job at selling games. Maybe Sony should have raised that marketing budget and put out better games that actually require the Move.

I couldnt have said it better myself.

So many emotionally charged comments.

Also, I just check Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy and Target and they all have move controllers for ~30 USD or higher.

Seriously, a Gamestop online deal is enough to have leo-j question Move being discontinued.

This was a topic for the vgc community to discuss, I never said I questioned whether or not sony would continue shipping move in the near future..
