Movement and combat never really come together in a cohesive matter. When you're overrun by the undead or your weapon suddenly breaks and you need to defend and retreat, it becomes painfully obvious that the game can't handle multitasking or movements made in quick succession, and will perform only one (and sometimes none) of the many actions you need to survive.

Awkward motion controls and shallow combat make Rise of Nightmares a frighteningly unremarkable adventure in zombie killing.

Could have been a passable romp through a zombie-infested castle of terror, but the frustrating controls, lack of horror elements, and sub-par presentation make it a game that's difficult to recommend, especially for the mature audience it's meant for.

If the game had been as unique as the controls, and it didn't just try to directly map first-person action gameplay onto a less responsive format, Rise of Nightmares could have been something pretty special. This game may not be that great, but it shows that the Kinect itself has potential.

2 positive, 3 mixed, 2 negative reviews.

Personally I think reviews are irrelevant for this title. The question is will it sell? Kinect is unproven with this kind of title and clearly MS are hoping that, unlike a lot of mature titles on Wii like Madworld, the 360/Kinect combo can support mature rated Kinect titles. Motion titles tend to be more "review proof" if they reach out to their casual audience and therefore for me the real test is the sales - will it just be a curio title or will it show real promise?

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Oh well.  That's that.  More money for my Sony 3D headset, I guess.

Just throwing out my mini-review/opinion:

Picked it up yesterday. Played about 1hr to 1 and 1/2hrs of it. I am to chapter 3.5 (or what I believe to be 3.5). Here are a few thoughts:

1. The overall idea of the game is excellent. Its the first Kinect game of its kind that doesn't (to my knowledge) constrain you to an on-rails or static experience. This alone is a huge task for any game to accomplish, much less do a good job at. Movement controls are not perfect or precise. There are a few times that it seems to re-center my shoulders at a slight angle which means that when I am centered perfectly, I am moving slightly to the left or right. Moving forward/backward could be more precise too. But again, its the first of its kind.

2. Gameplay is great. Fighting is an incredible, non-linear experience. Smashing baddies with your fists, kicks, melee and thrown weapons is a great experience. It isn't greatly in-depth, but for what it is, its fun. Pummeling a baddie into submission is a very rewarding experience. I am learning to do more dismemberment kills and hope to eventually start kicking them into environmental dangers for the achievement and the fun of it.

3. Storyline is cheezy, but passable. Its very violent too. Its a mix of Resident Evil and Hostel with a bit of ham thrown in. Very violent - lots of arms, legs and torsos get removed during cut scenes. Lots of foul language too.

4. Its a workout. My arms are very sore from the fights.

5. Probably the biggest aggravation is the static camera view when walking around. You can't look up or town. This is a shame because the camera head tracking during cut scenes is unbelievably good. It lets you look around the room by moving your head up/down which is amazing.

Overall, its worth a 7.5/10. Is it worth $50? From the length of the game (that I've heard), I'd say 'no'. But it is a must-play if you own Kinect. If this is the future of Kinect games with more refinement, there is a great future for Kinect. The format needs polish, but it really gets your brain thinking on what can be done with this style of game. I'd like to see them refine and iterate on it. Preferably the same style without the fighting, in an adventure format. The game makes me think of 'D' for PS1 in the fact its kind of a fresh take on a genre.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
