True and not true. Christians were being persecuted in around 200AD and wanted to celebrate Christs birth. So they decided to celebrate it at the same time as the pagan holiday. Though I must admit it wasn't a Christian holiday to begin with. Also Santa Clause is Christian, he was Saint Nicholus.

Everything we celebrate about at Christmas is because of Christianity. Also the twelve days thing, I think that was just a song. hanukkah is the holiday that lasts multiple days at Christmas time. Also the giving and recieving of presents was also a symbolic jesture and practice started by Christian's in celebrating Christmas.

Do you honestly believe we would still be celebrating the holiday of lights today if it weren't for Christian's? Its Christmas thats what it is. The reason it is celebrated is entirely based on the Christian faith.

That being said their is nothing wrong with everyone else celebrating it. As long as they don't try to impose their changes on its heritage and on those who still celebrate what it stands for. Also people should be educated as to why we have Santa and why Christmas is celebrated. Whether the real date of Jesus birth or not it still is symbolic of his birth!

You're actually wrong. Christians weren't being persecutted when they hijacked Christmas. It was starting with the 4th century did Christians start celebrating Christmas during the winter.

And it's funny how you talk about educating others, when you yourself are terribly uneducated regarding this issue. Most of the Christmas traditions we have today come from pegan festivals: the gift giving custom comes from the Roman Saturnalia (I actually can't believe you think Christians started this one), using lights and being charitable are coustoms adopted from the Roman New Year, and Christmas carols and the Christmas tree come from Scandinavian pagan traditions. There's actually little Christmas customs have to do with Christianity and Jesus.

People would've definately celebrated something at Christmas time, considering that all over Europe there were festivals at that time, and people love holidays. Christmas doesn't need Christianity, and no longer uses it anyway.

And Santa Clause certainly isn't a religious figure. He was made popular by fiction books and Coca Cola.

As sad as it is to see, the cross does offend people out there. Should it come as a suprise that decency, and civility for that matter, are dying? Here's an example the vgchartzer's are being greeted with when coming here:

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=133558

This is by a WRITER FOR THE SITE. Deplorable is the only word I can think of for this action.

funny, that thread, in 30 pages has less anti-religious sentiment than this thread has anti-atheist sentiment in 2.

After reading this statement and your thread asking vgchartz user's to "Prove God Exists", I really have to wonder why you still have the writer's badge on your avatar or haven't been banned for "X amount of days".

so clarify this for me: what you're trying to say is that it IS okay to be angry when Atheists have a problem with religion, but it's not okay to question religious truth?

These beams were a symbol of hope for many of the people who saw them/heard about them. If you do not believe in the symbol that is fine, but do not deprive those who do of being able to view them.

The idea of these beams, that just HAPPENED to form a t (or a cross, whichever) in the middle of such mayhem, are causing people to be sick....I had to laugh at that. The beams did not make anyone sick, the people made themselves sick. The power of the human mind is amazing.

The only real thing I can say to Atheists is, you should pick your battles better. This just seems extremely petty to me.

1.)  I think it's okay to be disgruntled with atheists that are trying to remove an uplifting symbol (that wasn't intentionally erected) tied to a historic event.  If the courts determine that it doesn't belong in the museum, then that's fine with me.

2.)  I think it's not okay for an official writer of a website to lower himself/herself to the point of attacking another user's belief when he/she is aware of the answer to their religious question.  Your thread title is contradictory to what the very foundation on what faith is said to be in the Bible.  In the OP, you say terms like "Walk by faith, not by sight" are not allowed in your thread.  That already shows you have a biased stance in which you won't allow anyone to explain the "spiritual side" of their beliefs.  Personally, I think you were recently watching/listening a program that had something involving Christianity and felt like going on a rant, which now proves costly to your reputation (or at least should prove costly).

3.)  Everyone has a right to question religions, it's another thing to do so over the internet.  I'm sure the likes of Einstein and many philosophers dived into spirituality on their own, rather than demanding others discover it for them.  It's about as foolish as asking for second-hand information from a bunch of people, rather than going to the source.  If you TRULY wish to find proof that God exists, I encourage you to just read the Bible and then make the decision to either accept/reject what's stated in there.

1 - No it is not.  Atheists get upset about religious symbols about the same that religious people get upset about atheists supposedly repressing their faith.

2 - No, this is flawed.  What you're trying to say here is "Since you work for the site, you are not allowed to have an opinion."  you may not be coming outright and saying it, but that's the message that comes across.  The very fact that I work for the site should not exclude me from having what SHOULD be an enlightening and engaging discussion.  I talked to my bosses, they agreed I was being very civil and fair.  The only people disagreeing with that are those who are offended, naturally.

3 - I do plenty of discussions in person, but there are far more people to discuss it with online. Also, the whole "Read the bible for all the answers" is...just...so....faulty.  I honestly can't think of a more flawed argument, since that equates to "This is how it is, because I said so."  No, just no. Also, for the record, I've read the bible through multiple times, the only value that book has is as a placebo for people who are looking for moral guidance or empty promises of eternal life in heaven.

Just as Easter and Christmas, though Christian in their roots

Haha, why repost this crap? If they don't know anything about religion, why should we listen to their ramblings?

christmas is a christian holiday, is it not? or does some other religion celebrate birth of christ?

Jesus was actually born in the summer (August, I believe), and most biblical scholars agree with this POV. What you today call Christmas was a pagan holiday which christians hijacked because people didn't wanna give up celebrating it. Christmas is part of christianity's 'pagan heritage'. Lot's of people today associate it more with Santa Clause and giving and recieving presents rather than with the birth of Jesus.

i know jesus wasnt born in december and i know 25th december was a date for a pagan holiday but thats all that's pagan about christmas - the date on which is celebrated. The rest is all christian. And by rest i mean the whole point of christmas - birth of christ. and christmas is far from secular holiday. as for santa, people (who are older than 8) do know the true meaning of christmas, its just that media, retailers and big corporations try to bring the materialistic sid of christmas really hard, and they are doing a pretty good job at it

That is silly, sappi, every country and culture have a different way of celebrating christmas, the english/american way isnt the only way. in serbia, for example we dont even celebrate christmas on december 25th but on january 7th, and we dont decorate the tree for christmas but for new year. there are tons other different traditions i just cant explain and name them all in english. the western way of celebrating christmas isnt the only way

Believe me, not everyone realyl cares about the birth of Christ when it comes to christmas, and have no problem celebrating Christmas without any reference to that (the japanese for example).

Christmas traditions have nothing to do with Christianity. That's what I was trying to point out to Jowl. even the habit of being charitable during Christmas was taken from a pagan holiday.
