Forums - Nintendo - History Says the 3ds is Doomed According to IGN

Gamecube and N64 came out after PS1 and PS2 respectively? So there the head start is what really did them in.

Virtual boy had shit graphics and doesnt have Mario kart 3ds andMario 3d as system sellers.

The 3ds dropped its price BEFORE the VITA came out.

For all intents and purposes, the 3ds is still techically beating the Vita which has global sales of 0 as of now.

No no no... just like with the PS3 you may only count the sales from the competitors when the Sony device is released... ;)

The main flaw in this analysis is that no other Nintendo platform has been released at a price where price was a major factor preventing people from buying the system ... While we won't know for sure for a few weeks/months until we've seen the long term effects, being that the system sold out at several local retailers when selling at $200 (with the promised price-drop games), I think price has been a major issue for the 3DS.

then why did nintendo cut the price on the platforms mentioned? i thought that was what the whole article was about?

they are doomed either way

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

i believe this article will be something to laugh at after something like 3-4 years when 3DS will have reached 100m

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

IGN jumping the gun here. It's still too soon to know. There's no Mario or Pokemon to sell the system, and they had a price drop recently. People may start to buy the system now.

It won't be on pair with the smartphones business, but it will manage to do well. Not so much in japan once the vita hit the shelves though. Vita will be dominant there.

I don't know if I'd bet on the Vita outselling 3DS in Japan, especially if the handheld continues to pick up and if they manage to get some killer apps to make the system more of a purchase (MH, DQ?)

History also says IGN is more often than not, completely wrong. It really is the worst gaming site around and this article gives me faith that the 3DS will do well (I say this in spite of the knowledge I won't be buying one, I trust IGN's incompetence to make it so.)

Vita already has a MH (at launch? I'm not sure) , while no MH has been announced (so far) for the 3DS, so at least initially, Vita may sell like gangbusters in comparison to the 3DS.

Now if a MH 3D is announced for the 3DS, that may change things, but so far, it looks like it is the other way around.

The price cuts for the N64 & Gamecube were basically follow the leader moves to Sony's PSX & PS2 price cuts. The PSX & PS2 both had one year head starts where the N64 & Gamecube had to play catchup. Sony's price cuts were strategically timed to within months of the competition's releases and forced Nintendo to make retaliatory price cuts even when they said they wouldn't.

  • PlayStation 1 was released on September 1995 in the US
  • Nintendo 64  was released on September 1996 in the US
  • On March 1997 Sony cut the price of the PSX by $50
  • the next week Nintendo cut the price of the N64 by $50
  • PlayStation 2 was released on October 2000 in the US
  • Gamecube was released on November 2001 in the US
  • On May 2002 Sony cut the price of the PS2 to $199 (-$100)
  • the next week Nintendo cut the price of the GC to $149 (-$50)

The story of the Virtual boy is that it was D.O.A.  Price cuts couldn't save its poor design so they cut production.

 MH 3D

Monsters Hunter 3D is almost a no brainer, but you'll have to settle with Dinosaurs 3D from Ubisoft.
