Forums - Nintendo - History Says the 3ds is Doomed According to IGN

Nobody seems to remember the DS. The only thing that gave that decent sales out of the gate was the fact that it was launched near a holiday, but with an equally poor lineup

The other difference in play here was that Nintendo's sales expectations were wayyy higher, since they had confidence in the 3DS that they didn't have in the DS (recollect the whole "third pillar" thing), so Nintendo's panicking more to a slow start

So, the only way for it to not d0med is to not get a price cut? Sure

No, it's to sell so much that it doesn't need a price cut so fast. And that didn't happen.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

Man this 3DS hype of doomedness is soo similar to the PS3: High launch rpice, no gamez, hate, market leader prior...but all worked out and I believe it will do just fine in the long run.

To be fair to IGN, they do say toward the end that anything can happen and make a point of saying the incentives Ninty are giving are unprecedented.

What makes this slightly more amusing is that Nintendo have littered the 3DS with all the failure console's games.

Pilotwings did little for the SNES, Mario 3D Land 64, Mario Kart 2, Starfox 64 and OoT couldn't save the N64.

Good job Luigi's Mansion and Mario Kart 4, er, I mean 7 aren't too far away. Combined with Pikmin and Mario Sunshine 2 in 2012, the 3DS will be unstoppable.

We all know this but this is a pretty funny observation nonetheless.

My prediction is that the 3DS will bounce back through a pokemon, MH, and 2D Mario game (depending on the audience a Mario Galaxy too). Unless 3DS has at LEAST 2 pokemon games, I do not see it passing 110 million, not a chance in hell. If there are 2 pokemon games released spaced apart enough, that alone will push it.

Make games, not war (that goes for ridiculous fanboys)

I may be the next Maelstorm or not, you be the judge http://videogamesgrow.blogspot.com/  hopefully I can be more of an asset than a fanboy to VGC hehe.

Well we all know IGN never lies..

Fanboys = easiest source for lots of hits. Next!

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Well I think for some people doomedz is selling worse that 3DS. Just like PS3 is perpetually doomedz because it hasn't done PS2 numbers. 3Ds seems not to be capable of putting up DS numbers in its lifetime, but it can come close to GBA, and I'm confident it will outsell PSP lifetime.

The big difference with 3DS and 2 of the 3 comparisons is that 3DS has no current gen competition. So people looking at moving into the next gen of handheld console only have one choice at present. The question is do people think there's a big enough difference between DS and 3DS to make the switch? Is 3DS competing with current gen handheld consoles? On current weekly sales you'd have to say DS and 3DS are in direct competition, as is PSP. I think struggling to differentiate from last gen devices is the main issue. To outward appearance and the general masses the only difference between 3DS and DS is the 3D slider, and that doesn't seem to be as big a selling point as perhaps was hoped.

I think Nintendo realised there wasn't enough perceived differentiation to warrant such a big price difference, so they had to bring the price closer to current DS and maybe people will think it's worth buying 3DS over DS.

For me personally if I was thinking of buying a Ninty handheld the launch price of 3DS would steer me towards DS, because even having more knowledge of what technically differentiates DS and 3DS I still see DS as the better value product. But after 32% comes off 3DS I think I'd be more inclined to get 3DS.

I think 3DS pricecut will be an exception to the historical pattern.
