This is actually very bad news, I mean, these devs will only have 1 year to develop a game before Wii U launches. That will translate in tech demo-like games, very rushed and unpolished games or simply games not ready until 2014 or so. I doubt they can make large scale games in HD (which they never worked on before) in less than a year.

E3 was in June, Wii U will likely launch November, from the way that adds up, it's 17 months for those developers that were told nothing before E3 - hardly "less than a year".

Add to the fact that not all developers were told so late (at a guess, the ones that made NSMB:Mii and all the other tech demos had some idea of how to program for the console and what it was capable of).

I'm surprised that you would instantly make up some negatives to think about something that Nintendo does. That doesn't sound like you at all Tres.

Yeah, it is likely that the details would have been released on an as-needed basis initially; and developers who were working on near launch project would have been given the most information at the earliest point, while developers who were going to work on projects that released 6 to 12 months (or more) after the Wii U launch were probably kept out of the loop.

Why do you think Wii U will launch in November, where did you get that idea from?

3DS was first shown during E3 2010 and it was launched this March. Less than a year for Wii U is just about right.

Plus NSMB:Mii is a tech demo, that's what it is. It was not even using the HW specs fully, in all fairness it was just a ported NSMBWii engine with the new controller tacked on.

Of course, it is possible that the Wii U will launch before November, but the 3DS was shown in a much more complete form than the Wii U was at their respective E3's, so March would be an incredibly surprisingly early date for it to launch, NOT the expected.

@ bolded - so you admit that developers were using the HW specs partially before E3, Excellent! We are now in complete agreement.

Why do you say that November is the expected date? Besides I never said I expect it by March. June is the most probable scenario for me.

@bolded: None of the devs had anything to show aside from a few rushed tech demos. You cannot call that using the HW specs properly. Even 3rd parties had to show PS3 footage. I seriously doubt Wii U can have a decent launch line-up, that consists of anything other than ports of PS3/360 games and a couple of games from Nintendo. The droughts will be far more severe than what they were for the 3DS if the majority of devs were kept in the dark for this long.  More so when the most important teams were forbidden to have a dev kit.

The two bolded comments are contradictory. Please edit one.

As for November, I simply judging it based on how ready Nintendo presented the console as being. Who knows if I shall be right.

So you agreed that developers started work on Wii U software before E3, that is all I wanted from you, so I am done here.

No I don't agree that all developers didn't start working before E3, that's ridiculous now. I was talking about the devs that were kept in the dark. Why are you trying to spin something you will never be able to?

And then, releasing next June before E3 starts is less than a year after this year's E3 finished.

What do you guys mean by a lot of time needed to use that second screen well ?

It's trivial actually.

You can't use it for anything significant for any multiplayer game since there's a chance someone will be using this screen to play game.

If you are making single player only game then you put inventory, mini-map etc on it or use it as tablet for Okami clones ;)

Also is that Nintendo dev a total moron who lives in a cave and never heard of pc gaming ? Pc games have been designed for last 15 or 20 years with multiplayer where people don't see each other screen.

Ahh, yes, I love that logic. 'Some developers were kept in the dark therefore all developers will be incapable of producing a title for launch'. Quite clearly, those that were kept in the dark won't be the ones that produce launch titles, ignoring ports, remakes, and games along the lines of Wii Sports. Those who were not kept in the dark will have plenty of time to get high quality launch titles together.

Well, I'm willing to bet against you in terms of the release date. If it's less than a year from the date it was announced, you win, if it's more than 14 months from the announcement I win, with a 2 month gap in which we call it a draw. You choose the stakes (but I will not do anything that would offend others or get me banned)
