Forums - Gaming - This is just ludicrous - continuous "console gaming is dying" articles

Exactly, it makes you wonder what these people are thinking.

I thought they're really talking about the future and not this second.

I mean... if OnLive works out a deal with SONY and MS then there is no need to upgrade your consoles ever. You'll be able to play any game on the best hardware and just use what you currently have for streaming it to your tv.

^That's still far away tho and has nothing to do with little mobile games. If that happens we'll still have exclusives and different control schemes and people who would rather have their copy of a game (if the publishers do't ahve it their way, that is). Anyway, even after it's made practical and gets good 3rd party support, it'll be just another console for quite some time.

Apple and those that develop for their devices want to see console gaming die. So they are wishfully thinking and like to brag all the time. Phil Harrison's recent statement that within ten years Apple will own the games industry is hilarious. These iOS developers have their heads in the cloud.

Apple would need to drastically change its way of doing things to over take Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft. Not only would they need first party content they would need to drastically cut prices and go mainstream with a console. Even then Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft would put up one hell of a fight to maintain their marketshares.

Do I think the I-Pad and I-Phone could hurt handheld sales? Yes I do but they certainly are not going to run Nintendo or Sony out of town. Then they are not a threat to home consoles, if Apple wants to take over gaming within 10 years they would need to invest in a powerful game device and some big budget first party titles. This isn't going to happen within ten years.

The developers of Angry Birds are hilarious they talk about the end of console gaming. But they desperatly want to release Angry Birds on WiiWare and other console networks. If consoles are so dead why do they want their game to be on a console so badly?

actually, Angry Birds is already on the PSN

if the consoles weren't selling well i would say yes they have a point but this gen has sold more than any previous generation so they are aether stupid or just want it to be that way!

99 cents.

Every generation overall console sales jump.

3rd Gen - 62 million (NES)
4th Gen - 78 million (SNES/Gen)
5th Gen - 144 million (N64/PS1/Saturn)
6th Gen - Will pass 200 million (PS2/GCN/XB/DC)
7th Gen - 191 million already, may pass 250 million (Wii/360/PS3)

So no console gaming is not dying.

What is dying is console gaming in Japan, and thus a lot of Japanese content. SNES was full of great JRPG's, now consoles are almost missing them all together. Wii currently really doesn't have any 8/10 or greater RPG's in americas, and it's turning 6 this year.

In Japan

3rd Gen - 19 million
4th Gen - 21 million
5th Gen - 33 million (Didn't know Sega Saturn outsold N64 in Japan...hm...)
6th Gen - 28 million
7th Gen - 20 million, and probably won't pass 25 million

Portable gaming is taking over in Japan DS on it's own has out sold the original Gameboy, with only 2.3rds as much lifetime, and add PSP that we see a 56% growth. From 5th-7th gen consoles we see a 25% decline.

The biggest threat to dedicated gaming machines is the gaming industry itself. They are continually rising the development costs while at the same time they keep pumping out games that narrow the appeal of these platforms. The saving grace "casual games" will have no staying power, because within at most a couple of years people will realize that they get continually ripped off and then they quit buying games. Console gaming will become more and more dominated by a few key franchises while everything else dies away.

The good thing is that console gaming will always have the ability to come back, but for that the industry has to change its ways and stop the current madness. You know, they are blaming all sorts of things for why they have a hard time to turn a profit, but they never consider that they themselves are the real problem with stupid DRMs, DLCs etc.

I dont really believe that certain key franchises will dominate anytime soon and theres nothing wrong with dlc if released in a good time zone and with reasonable content.

Pretty much like the biggest part of the game industry, they have no idea what's going or even and what gaming is about.

Above: still the best game of the year.

Some issues with phone gaming are that they are very limited in controller input options, each game's performance varies from phone to phone, and game development budgets are limited by the price points in those markets.

The model currently in place works fine for casual games because they are cheap to make and utilize few inputs to interact with the game.

Traditional games require more complex controls to better interact with more developed gameplay mechanics and need larger development budgets to create these assets and systems.
