Every generation overall console sales jump.
3rd Gen - 62 million (NES)
4th Gen - 78 million (SNES/Gen)
5th Gen - 144 million (N64/PS1/Saturn)
6th Gen - Will pass 200 million (PS2/GCN/XB/DC)
7th Gen - 191 million already, may pass 250 million (Wii/360/PS3)
So no console gaming is not dying.
What is dying is console gaming in Japan, and thus a lot of Japanese content. SNES was full of great JRPG's, now consoles are almost missing them all together. Wii currently really doesn't have any 8/10 or greater RPG's in americas, and it's turning 6 this year.
In Japan
3rd Gen - 19 million
4th Gen - 21 million
5th Gen - 33 million (Didn't know Sega Saturn outsold N64 in Japan...hm...)
6th Gen - 28 million
7th Gen - 20 million, and probably won't pass 25 million
Portable gaming is taking over in Japan DS on it's own has out sold the original Gameboy, with only 2.3rds as much lifetime, and add PSP that we see a 56% growth. From 5th-7th gen consoles we see a 25% decline.
