The biggest threat to dedicated gaming machines is the gaming industry itself. They are continually rising the development costs while at the same time they keep pumping out games that narrow the appeal of these platforms. The saving grace "casual games" will have no staying power, because within at most a couple of years people will realize that they get continually ripped off and then they quit buying games. Console gaming will become more and more dominated by a few key franchises while everything else dies away.

The good thing is that console gaming will always have the ability to come back, but for that the industry has to change its ways and stop the current madness. You know, they are blaming all sorts of things for why they have a hard time to turn a profit, but they never consider that they themselves are the real problem with stupid DRMs, DLCs etc.

I dont really believe that certain key franchises will dominate anytime soon and theres nothing wrong with dlc if released in a good time zone and with reasonable content.
