Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony needs to buy/start a RPG studio

Im sick of the open world WRPGs and like a story-driven game which I find in most good JRPGs. The Dragon Quest series is great for Japan since based on the sales, they do not mind if the franchise doesnt take any large steps away from tradition. But gamers always want RPGs to be different from the last one but not stray too far from the formula.

In order of who?

Atlus
NIS
XSEED
Tri-Ace
FromSoftware

Really tho, perfect fit would be NIS. They already make great games for Sony, they are FANTASTIC at localizing their games and they are pretty quick in bringing games out. Just think what they could do with some more money and backing?

Xseed is more of a publisher instead of a developer though.

I already editted that in an earlier post.  Should have been Media.Vision Entertainment (developers of Wild Arms, for whom Xseed now Publishes)

Yeah that's pretty much the only thing I'm missing for my ps3. Maybe I will pick up Fallout 3, it is only like 10 dollars now...

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

That would be fantastic. It means you would see plenty of RPG's for the Playstation systems. Im in need of RPG's i was playing them all the time last Gen but now its just here and there and half of them are rubbish.

I would love to see sony buy or refocus one of their owned studios (maybe SCE japan) to making jrpgs. Also, part of the reason for the low rpg numbers is the fact that a lot of them are released on the psp instead of the ps3 e.g. valkyria chronicles 2 &3.

Ok, so first I would like to point out that this is a very tough period for Sony financially. They will soon be releasing Vita, which is expected to sell at a loss on hardware for 3 years. This is particularly bad for handhelds - extra controllers on home consoles are a great source of income). They are also no doubt spending a lot of RnD money finishing the PS4, which shall release shortly afterafter Vita, and which will also likely be sold at a loss for the first 2+ years.

What this means, is that Sony have to be very careful about what developers they buy, and what new studios they open.

With the exception of those made by Nintendo or Square-Enix, JRPG's do not generally sell particularly well. This is doubly true this generation, the majority of new JRPG franchises have underperformed. Almost all the exceptions to this are on the DS. Look for example at all the money Microsoft poured into moneyhatting some (timed) exclusive JRPGs - total waste of money.

As for WRPGs, these also have a great danger of underperforming. Many do quite well, but others do not, and they can be quite expensive to make.

Sony have by far the largest 1st party, but they are squandering its potential. They need to cut unprofitable studios, and focus on games that they know there is an audience for, and most importantly, they need to win back third party support.

Also, platformers are much more popular as a genre than you appear to believe.

I think they should take unprofitable studios (i.e. Zipper) and refocus them on a different genre (jrpg). This may be a risk as the dev may be doing something that they havent previously but they may bring a new way of thinking that may prove successful (or equally possibly fail) and sony wouldnt necessarily have to give them a huge budget to play with.

Now Sucker Punch is bought, which studio do you guys think logically should be the next one Sony should buy? Which one makes more financial sense? which studio has some strong IPs produced and could add to the WorldWideStudios?

I think if they concentrate their resources get a good story write, bring back some classic RPG combat, and start legend of dragoon from scratch has potential to be the next dragon quest or final fantasy franchise. Too bad Xenogears developers never made a good game after Xenogears, Xenosagas were not as good, and now they belong to N.

Between, its an often made mistake but Xenogears and Xenosagas is not from the same developers. They just share some staff members. Anyway, Xenosaga was awesome too :P, as well as Xenoblade.

I vote for MistWalker, and for anyone who says not possible, if there is anything this Gen had taught me is never say never...
