Forums - General - Canada to start using plastic money!

germs can also spread over plastic money paper money can also be washed atleast the euro which also smells nice no reason not to wash it. also blind people can feel points over the bills to determin what value they have this was also done on our precedessor currency which was just paper. And its colorful too those are no good points for plastic over paper but harder too tear up is a reason to prefer plastic if its cheaper.

If you wanna wash paper money, be my guest.

I have seen the picture of the new bill, and I believe it still has the points over the bill to determin the value. The creation of the bill is most importantly to step up on counterfitting.

Plastic money isn't exactly that bad. Also I wish they would get rid of the 1cent coin. It is very useless and should be removed. I doubt many would complain rounding to the nearest 5cents.

Sounds awesome. But then money will lose its distinctive smell.

Good. I hear it's harmful.

Plastic is more harmful why switch to using more to plastic?  Unless it is bio degradable plastic because regular plastic is pretty damn bad for the environment.  I get pissed at bottle water.  I'll get pissed at this.  Sure people won't just throw this plastic away but eventually it will have to.  Recycling plastics still produces toxins.

You are aware that people don't throw away money, right? (at least not literally in the trash)

Eventually they will have to retire the plastic money just like they do with regular bills (the plastic would last longer but I am sure they would still take it out of the money supply either due to new counterfeiting techniques/etc).  Hemp sounds like a good enough material for me.

@sapphi_snake I did a lot of times by accident euro can be washed without a problem nothing at all happens except the smell is nicer you can wash it put it in the dryer and iron it like a t-shirt repeatedly and there is no damage at all.

Plastic seems more durable so its a good thing too use those bills but most of the reasons mentioned above are not pro plastic since they apply to paperbills too.

@Acevil agree with the cent coins 1-2 it only piles up and makes the wallet heavy I personally wouldnt mind to get rid of coins completly just use bills for everything. Plastic or not i dont care just wanted to clear up some things about paperbills which arent that fragile like everyone seems to think.

Right way to go in my opinion...no more losing bills in the wash. Apparently they'll cost about twice as much to manufacture...I wonder how that will affect things.

And as an aside, I hope that they phase out the penny. Costs more to produce than it's worth, and no one really cares about it. Penny candy might be affected, but that's all I can think of. Oh, and take a penny, leave a penny.

Yah I'm all for getting rid of the penny. Heck I have a couple thousand pennies just sitting in a jar. Gonna go to the bank eventually and use em but they aren't really worth much on their own. Also I haven't seen 1cent candies in stores for along time. All I see are five sent ones. It would also be nice to see retailers pricing their products at say 10$ rather then 9.99$ to make it sound cheaper lol!

As for colour, the Canadian currency has been colourful for years. I hate going to America and wondering how much money I have. So many times I've given a twenty instead of a one. Luckily the employees have been honest and not stolen my money. I prefer being able to see the colour and know which bill is which! Colour makes life so much easier!

I suppose you meant going to the United States, since America is a continent and Canada is part of it.

People in North America, and some parts of the world, refer to America as United States. If they say Americas they mean the two continents.

I like that...hope the US starts to do this.

Doubtful, currency changes in the US always seem to hit a road block. Look at the one dollar coin.
