Are there actual benefits to using plastic money?

It's more resistent and harder to counterfeit (though this may be a disadvantage if you're into counterfeiting money ).

I remember several years ago my friend was showing off his australian currency and how it is a polymer bill. he basically went into how the bill is more durable etc etc, and then he gave it one firm tug to demonstrate and the bill split in half right there and then. i nearly coughed out a spleen laughing so hard!

Polymer bills are fine by me, they generally do last longer than regular paper bills, but i think if the edge has a little tear, its very easy to rip right through the rest of the bill like butter. i am assuming that's what happened to my friend.

Priceless!

Right way to go in my opinion...no more losing bills in the wash. Apparently they'll cost about twice as much to manufacture...I wonder how that will affect things.

And as an aside, I hope that they phase out the penny. Costs more to produce than it's worth, and no one really cares about it. Penny candy might be affected, but that's all I can think of. Oh, and take a penny, leave a penny.

Yah I'm all for getting rid of the penny. Heck I have a couple thousand pennies just sitting in a jar. Gonna go to the bank eventually and use em but they aren't really worth much on their own. Also I haven't seen 1cent candies in stores for along time. All I see are five sent ones. It would also be nice to see retailers pricing their products at say 10$ rather then 9.99$ to make it sound cheaper lol!

As for colour, the Canadian currency has been colourful for years. I hate going to America and wondering how much money I have. So many times I've given a twenty instead of a one. Luckily the employees have been honest and not stolen my money. I prefer being able to see the colour and know which bill is which! Colour makes life so much easier!

There is a number on it...and it's pretty fucking big...maybe you're blind?

Umm yah in the same colour as the rest of the bill merging into a frame. I mean seriously you have to stop and look at the bill to see the number. When your buying something and wanting to just grab 9$ from your pocket and you have twenties and hundreds mixed in their. Its very easy to accidently give a twenty or so, unless your paying attention and looking at the number on each bill.

I mean what were the US leaders thinking "Man camoflouge is so visable wouldn't it be great if our dollar bills were Camo as well", "Yah thats a great idea , lets make all our money the same colour and everything on the bill that same colour, it'll make life so much simpler".

P.S SnesBoy actually while I'm not blind anything more then say a foot ahead of me is a bit fuzzy. I don't like wearing my glasses.

But you know Canadian bills are all different colours and much easier to read then American ones. It makes shopping alot easier and is far more conveniant then having to look over every single bill to see the number that is virtually invisable! Thank goodness that I have a credit card now, when I go to the US no worries about giving the wrong currency!

had never heard of it but now with the examples here, it makes a bit more sense as to why some countries chose such vibrant colors... cause they can last.

One strong point you'll see is that there is probably less polution with plastic money... the inks are probably easier to set (heat I would guess with a plastic layer of protection, so the need for more durable inks at cold temp is lessened) and there won't be plastic polution due to the population willingly picking up those pieces of plastic if they lay arround on the floor :p

I like that...hope the US starts to do this.

Doubtful, currency changes in the US always seem to hit a road block. Look at the one dollar coin.

The U.S sucks at adopting anything useful. They like to use a technology until it is acient and it's deemed necessary to move on. The majority of Americans hate change and I'm speaking as an American.

If change was actually worth something then it wouldn't be so bad.  Just think in 1920s you could buy 10 burgers for probably less than 1 dollar.   When I first started driving in the late 90s gasoline was less than a dollar a gallon.  It is more of a problem of the USA dollar eroding..  What do you expect when the fed just prints trillions to bail out companies that shouldn't have been bailed out.

Gas prices in the US are actually much cheaper than most countries in the world.
