Forums - General Discussion - Canada to start using plastic money!

Well I thought I was dreaming when I saw the report on the news . The reporter stated Canada was dropping the 100 and 50$ bills in favour of plastic, full story after the break. I origionally thought that the Government was getting rid of fifty and hundred dollar bills in favour of credit and debit cards.

When the report came back they clarified that Canada will be using polymer made 100 and 50 dollar bills. The Government stated that plastic is far more durable then the paper cotton bills. The Government also stated these bills will have a host of new security features to keep pirates from making counter fits.

Apparently in a few years 10,20 and 5 dollar bills will likely follow making Canada the first country I know of to use plastic money. What do you think is this idea of plastic money a good thing? Are the security features worth it? What about the durability the Government says the bills will last 2.5 times longer then the paper cotton bills, what you think is that awsome or what?

Should the US follow Canada's lead? Infact should other countries in general? Whats your thoughts?

Australia, Bermuda, Brunei, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Romania and Vietnam all use (Polymer) Plastic Bank Notes. I am glad to see the change, I hate forgetting a $20 bill in my jeans then off the the washer/dryer. They come out looking very faded, and people think it's fake.....you gotta go to the bank to get a new one :(

There was a 10 BRL plastic note in Brazil some years ago, but it didn't work and you don't find it anymore.

Wow I had no idea so many other countries used plastic bills. The news stories made it sound like Canada was pioneering this. I guess its not that big of a deal if so many other countries already use them. Hey Sapphi your from Romania how do you like the plastic bills compared to the paper ones?  Or how about you Rath? Any other VGChartz users from one of those countries?

I'd be interested in hearing how people like the plastic bills compared to the Paper cotton ones.

Yes Australia uses it and its way better than paper bills. I remember the paper bills use to get wet and tear so easily. These are also shiny and gives it extra bling lol. Love the Aussie 100 note =D

Haha, I was just gonna post something in thsi thread. Great anticipation Joel!

I can't say I remember not using plastic bills. I don't think paper ones were used during my lifetime (or if they were, I was very little then, so I don't remember). I don't kike paper bills. They seem too fragile, plus I read that they spread germs. Not to mention that poor trees die to make those bills. I also like that the plastic ones are so colourful.

Anyways, it's expected that we'll be switching to the Euro in 2015, so I'll tell you the difference then, as the Euro is made out of paper (still, at least it's colourful! ).
