Forums - Gaming - Opinions regarding E3 astonish me how much they just seem off...

I am astonished at the degree opinions seem to miss things regarding E3, or at least how much they seem to end up flipflopping over time.  I am thinking of a number of examples here:

* Nintendo announces the Wii, and shows the remote, and everyone goes WTF? and laughs it off.  It is panned as beyond stupid, it looks like a TV remote and so on.  Then, Microsoft and Nintendo get into motion control and everyone goes nuts over it.

* Prior to E3 people were going how Microsoft HAD to show how Kinect would work with core gamers.  During this E3, Microsoft does this, and there is a large degree of booing that Microsoft didn't show enough games for core gamers using REGULAR controls.

* Coming out of last E3, there was mass excitement over the 3D and how it would end up rocking and everyone got one.  After release, going into this E3, the talk is how the 3DS, in its opening months is bombing, due to lack of content.  Nintendo shows a decent line up of titles from them, plus what is still coming, and the talk is how Nintendo dropped the ball?

* People wanted a reveal on what the next Nintendo console was, and what it would do, and mostly what the controller would be like.  The talk was also about info on whether or not it would come out this year.  Also, there was interested in what it would be getting.  Nintendo does all this, for a system that is over a year away, and now Ninendo released info "too early", for a system that is over a year away?

* People talk about winners and losers regard E3 coming out and how much they don't matter in the end.  People thought the Dreamcast won E3 in the day when it was shown, just to watch as the PS2 drove Sega out of the console business within a year or so.

Over and over and over again, all I can get here is how wrong people are, and how much the end result of things are missed.  What I see with the U system, assuming it hits the right price point, is it could end up locking down the next generation of home consoles, if it does what it could.  I base this, personally, on seeing what the controller can do, and also, the predictions of doom and failure.  Of course, what do I know.  I went on record saying Nintendo would NOT have Wii in the name.  And shoot, they go and do that, and have a name that sounds like Wii 2 to boot.

I will also go on record saying that the Vita looks real good to.

Good post. I agree very much.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

Its funny, I vividly remember the e3 the Wii Mote was first showed off and I was under the impression that it was hailed as tremendously innovative and full of potential. I even tried getting some of my friends to buy Nintendo stock. Oh if only we did...

Human nature.... still pretty hard to comprehend O_o

I laugh that people here are saying Sony won simply because of Vita's price. LOL really? 3DS bombard it with awesome games! This is the beginning of Wii U (bad name btw) and games will come.

Agree with most of your post. Anyways, I thought what Nintendo showed was pretty good. Their 3DS lineup should make for a very solid holiday season. I am psyched for Mario Kart 3DS, Super Mario 3DS, Luigi's Mansion, Paper Mario 3DS and a few others. Although most of the games I am psyched for are sequels; I usually don't mind because Nintendo never disappoints me in those series with story, game play, etc...  I'd rather see new IPs but I can forgive Nintendo for sticking with their main IPs.  They least handle their sequels better than most companies (Activision, EA, etc..)

The Wii U bird demo that was real time looked pretty good. I know Nintendo will think of many ways to make their tablet controller very fun to play with. I am glad Nintendo started focusing on controls a generation back. Sure you can release a bad ass spec system over and over again but with the same controls it starts to feel a little old. Focusing on controls should be the main focus of any video game console manufacture.

The sad thing, while I might be the vocal criticizer of Nintendo presentation, I actually generally agree with you. However the problem is that you seem to be focused generally on this site. Other sites actually seem to have decent liking of Nintendo's new machine. Really it is this site that has jumped the gun, and continues to show that it jumps the gun on almost everything.

Let me first start off by saying that I am an big Nintendo fan, but Nintendo didn't give its fans anything they could sink their teeth into during their press con. The first party 3DS titles are coming this holiday which is a great thing and I for one will probably be picking up a 3DS during that time, which I planned on doing a couple months ago. But we already knew about Mario Kart, Mario 3DS, Kid Icarus, Starfox 64 and even Resident Evil. Luigi's Mansion was the only game if I remember correctly that Nintendo surprised us with. And with the Wii U, yes more info and games has to be released and shown in order for me to get excited about it, but we won't be able to get our hands on it until at least a year from now. They barely mentioned the Wii and had only 1 game to show for it, only Skyward Sword which looks great, but again we knew about this and saw it already. So in my opion any way, why have a press conference about games that we already know about and a system in which we were told very little about and had most people scratching their heads after what they just saw/heard during the presser. I found out more information about Wii U when Adam Sessler and Blair interviewed Reggie after the press conference (how it is acutally a console and not just a controller, it will be releasing after March 31, it will run in 1080p) than I did during the conference. Like last years press conference was good because they showed a bunch of games that we didn't know about such as Kirby, Metroid Other M, Golden Sun, Donkey Kong...I felt like this year was a little bit of a let down. Same goes for all the companies really.

Well, if you look at sales prediction after sales prediction, the idea was that the Wii would be marginal at best, and the PS3 would dominate.  People didn't believe the controller for the Wii would make a difference.  I thought, due to price point, that Nintendo had a serious shot of doing things and what they were doing looked like fun.  I would say that you should count yourself in the minority here, and maybe give yourself a gold star or something.  My reaction to the U is more stunned and perplexed than the Wii though, but I think I get it.
