Forums - Sales - Eurogamer: Wii still over PS2 in sales

My family just purchased a 58" flat screen Sony Bravia along with a Wii.

After playing Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort along with playing No More Heroes, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and Donkey Kong Country Returns at my little brother's house, I am wondering how in the hell did the Wii ever sell this many consoles in the first place?

There are no games for the Wii which could make me ever want to put my own money down for a Wii game.

Is there some golden grail Wii game out there which converts everyone instantly? Obviously, No More Heroes, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and Donkey Kong Country Returns are not the ones.

As for the PS2, if I saw one for $50 today while in Wal-Mart, there are plenty of games I know and ones that I have not played from 2005 on that could keep me gaming for 200 hours.

Please stop these silly comparisons. There is a reason why Sony with the PS1 and PS2 outsold the NES, SNES, N64 and Gamecube combined. Great games for everyone from the bluest of the blue ocean with Ratchet and Clank, Crash Bandicoot, Legacy of Kain, Parasite Eve, Chrono Cross, and on.

The PS2 in my book is the king no matter what the charts say. If I remember correctly was Sony with the PS2 in 2007/2008 still bundling their Blue Ocean games to get the cheap sell to the wifey? No, Sony had dignity and I respect them for that while the Wii is out on the street corner like the 64 year old grandma selling her poontang for Sunday night bingo money at Geraldine's house where bingo is played with dollars.

The charts are not against Sony, they are with Sony.  The Wii is not passing 150 plus million.

Agreed.

Well, for about 25% of owners, NSMB Wii was that golden grail game. For me it was Smash Bros 3 years ago.

Other than that, you are about right.

I love how people just don't give the Wii the respect it deserves. Here are a few facts that people completly over look.

1) The PS2 was the 1st, 6th Generation Console to be released. It had a Year and 1 Month sales lead on either Xbox or the GameCube. The PS2 had absolutly no competition againt it. Thats one reason why it's numbers are so high.

2) The Wii on the other hand was released at the same time as the PS3, 1 Year after the 360. We are talking about a Console that was way behind in technology, and had 2 current Generation Consoles to contend with. And was still able to outsell them. Theres no wonder the Wii cant catch up to the PS2 sales, the PS2 had a massive advantage. But even seeing the Wii knock at the PS2's door is absolutly amazing, thats what makes it.....in my opinion.....the greatest console ever made.

Agreed, at least on the part where people don't give Wii enough respect. Wii came in with a million advantages and wiped the floor with its competition. On top of that, it was criticized to no end by the gaming press and, far more importantly, third parties, and still made a mockery out of its competition for over three years. Sure, it's fallen like a rock recently, but people still seem to try to make it sound like a failure, which would be amusing had it not been such a popular belief.

I don't, however, think that a console's greatness can be necessarily judged by raw sales, even if they are the most objective way of doing so.

He thinks the wii isnt a success because the audience isnt the 'hardcore' gamer. From this logic the NES and Atari is the most unsuccessful videogames of alll time since the hardcore gamer didnt exist. Even arcade gamers was considered casual.

I may have come across as harsh, but we all should be considering the price of these consoles.

I could have loved Donkey Kong Country Returns back in high school. From what I have played of it, it is the best in series and is the game closest to true old school gaming that I have seen come out in the past 5 years.

This being said, gaming has progressed from the platforming and arcade days. This is not to say a game true to the old school cannot sell because Donkey Kong Country Returns sure has sold and deserves every sell because it is a great game. Gaming has progressed to a point where we as gamers are spoiled.

We are spoiled in expecting a great novel like story told through Hollywood voice actors, more nonlinear gameplay, and character development (or lack thereof) according to how much the player wants to put in.

This schism where even FPS games have taken from RPGs in terms of character levels and character development through customization has a lot of gamers, myself included, demanding games like this on any console we play (Nintendo consoles especially as the best RPGs ever made came out on the SNES).

Sales does not make it the greatest console ever made.

The Wii is only so popular because it's target audience ISN'T the typical hardcore gamer.

While I do think it is underrated by hardcore gamers because they say "it's just a kids console", it still doesn't deserve the sales just because it's the latest trendy Christmas present.

Ya know, that argument is complete bull now because a large portion of children buy the Ps360,and we're talking 12 year olds and below. Oh and dont forget those 40 year old men that you all may not consider "hardcore" lol. That word makes me laugh now because it still doesnt make sense.

Wow some heated discussions in here, it's funny a little positive news is posted and people shit bricks going IT COULD NEVER HAPPEN!  When it could, it probably won't since Nintendo really isn't Sony, they don't produce or push older hardware, or bridge their titles between two platforms to fill in games in software support.

It's not their style, but seriously, if by some chance Nintendos price drops and evergreen titles alone make the Wii coast to at least 150 million lots of people here would have egg on their face, many people I remember saying the Wii couldn't even hit 100 million, that's in the bag now, 120 million "was impossible" to some, while that's completely plausible and likely, so coasting in it's twilight years for the late mass market adoptors (you know the ones that picked up a new PS2 in 2006) it could keep Wii breathing for a while.

People often overlook the late adoptors which is where Sony showed Nintendo and Sega how it's done with the PS1, both companies were awful about pushing hardware in a meaningful way back then cause they were essentially told to sell the systems like toys (IE the NES was in the Toy department FFS) things have changed and Nintendo might have changed their stance on supporting a system late into it's life, everyone needs to keep an open mind here me thinks.

That's not the reason it won't happen.

They would indeed, but it aint gonna happen so ... yeah.

many people I remember saying the Wii couldn't even hit 100 million, that's in the bag now, 120 million "was impossible" to some,

Lots of people on the internet say lots of stupid things. I think once people realised how  big Wii was in 08, most sensible people knew it would be over 100 mill easily.

while that's completely plausible and likely, so coasting in it's twilight years for the late mass market adoptors (you know the ones that picked up a new PS2 in 2006) it could keep Wii breathing for a while.

Clearly a different situation, PS2 twilight years had no competition from last gen consoles, so it had that late adopters market all to itself, Wii will barely touch that market, it'll be 360 and PS3 that appeals to them. That and the PS2 will have support. Nintendo are barely supporting the Wii now, let alone with 3DS and Cafe coming, at least Sony had 3rd party devs releasing SW.

Don't let this 'Wii is trending above PS2' misguide you, it doesn't really mean anything and certainly doesn't forecast their future. Wii is rapidly dropping about 5 million shipped YoY since 09 (25M, 08 > 20M, 09 > 15M, 10 > 13M 11 (expected ...)

Wii doesn't have the support of 3rd parties or developing countries to keep it chugging along, it's just down down down from here on out.

FY11 13M
FY12 10M
FY13 6M
FY14 3M
Leftover 2M

Total 120

How you think it's going to get another 32 million there from chugging along ... LOL

Nintendo have said it would be great to get 50% volume of the current userbase 86M, which is 129 .. but lately they've been off the mark a lot with Wii, the last 3 Q's have all been adjusted down, last FY they expected 18 mill, then dropped to 17.5, then 16M then ended up with 15M

Partly false, its market doesn't have have typical hardcore gamers, because 3rd parties chose to not bring those games over.

Had the first years of the Wii been given the same 3rd party games with only losses to HD visuals, Wii would gained the core gamer as well.

However, 3rd parties were short sighted in the beginning and then decided to not spend the money to make their engines Wii friendly as they were comfortable with PS360/PC userbase and created their own self-fulling logic of who the Wii market was and was not.

you're making the assuption that "hardcore gamers" would give up the graphics, a control scheme more suited to some types of games, superior online support etc... in my opnion your assuption is wrong

If they weren't willing to give that up....

all hardcore gamers would be playing on PCs right now.

The real "dirty secret" of gaming that people don't want to admit too?

CoD and GTA are casual.

Nitendo didn't target casual gamers anymore then anyone else.  What they targeted were different gamers and people who were getting bored of regular gaming.  People up for innovation.

i disagree some people don't game on pc for several reasons :

consoles are somewhat more straight forward to game with

the money required to afford a top of the line pc required to run games properly

the constant upgrading required to stay relevant

exclusives

etc
console provide comparable graphics and online systems for a lower price

None of those are actually true.... outside exclusives.

My 2-3 year old off the shelf computer plays modern games fine... the only upgrade i've ever performed was putting in a graphics card, which i did at the time i bought it.

The only games you really ever had to upgrade your PC for at a rate that was harsher then console upgrading was stuff like "Crysis" and even then only at the highest settings.

And well... that's coming out on consoles too... and has never really been any good.

and since when does the truth matter? its all about perceptions or what people percieve to be reality which in many situations is not the truth... for example when people say that the nintendo wii has become a kid friendly console with no "mature offerings" now we both know thats nonsense but its still a common misconception... the same applies to pc gaming many people believe the things i stated regardless of if they are true or not
