Forums - Sales - I don't understand.. why is the PS3 on top now?

dont forgte all the extra countries sony have in their grasp that nintendo and microsoft dont.  not only that but ps3 is a very well balanced console and the name is still very strong. well, maybe not in america but everywehre else it is.

Sony even when Sony  won the last two generations, they relied so much on 3rd party support that they did not put their own studios front center. This Generation is different, with so many games going multiplatform, Sony had to count on their own studios and they delivered big time. Playstation's best games are no longer from another developer. This is what Nintendo has done ad Sony is doing as well. The PS3 is simply the best valued console period, and it shows.

The PSN issue is temporary. Like everyone has said, it has the games; the competition is losing focus and people are realizing that PS3 has the best value.

Why buy a Blu-Ray player? You can buy a PS3 and have a Blu-Ray player, DVD playing, Netflix streaming, web-browsing and online gaming machine.

Why buy a Wii? You can buy the PS3 Move bundle with all the normal gaming, control rumbling, motion gaming machine (with equally floppy Move games, but with some hardcore, fun games!)

Why buy a 360? You can buy a PS3 and have an equal HD-gaming, free online-gaming, better exclusive, Free facebook access, Netflix playing and other things.

The thing is, with the start of this gen, most of those third party franchises jumped ship.  Their games became mult-plats.  Sony WAS FORCED to step their game up.  They did a hell of a job, too!  Sony is pumping out some of the highest (if not THE highest) quality games on the market.  Games like GoW3, Killzone 3, Unchated, and such are just plain incredible.  It may not be Sony Computer Entertainment that makes a lot of them (Quantic Dream, Naughty Dog, and Guerilla Games kick ass!) but they're released under the Sony banner and their quality cannot be denied.

My point is, it was simply allocation of money.  Sony developed a stronger first party this generation due to circumstance,  but it was there even during the PS2 days (Just with not with titles that didn't have huge budgets).   PS1 had a very good amount of first party offerings, however.

I have to disagree.

I think their first party studios this gen was the same like last gen... nothing changed with Sony's first party after alll... Sony is not spending more money with first party than last gen.

Look...

Naughty Dog: Crash Bandicoot -> Jak & Daxter -> Uncharted
Team ICO: ICO -> Shadow of Colossus -> Last Guardian
Santa Monica: God of War
Liverpool: WipEout (and a lot of others games)
Guerrilla Games: Killzone
Evolution: World Rally Championship -> MotorStorm
Polyphony Digital: Gran Turismo
Cambridge: Some games for all PlayStation Family
Team Soho: Some games for all PlayStation Family
Japan:  A lot of games for all PlayStation Family
London: A lot of games for all PlayStation Family
Bend: Syphon Filter (nothing to PS3 yet)
Foster City: Just to help first/second party like Zipper Interactive, Naughty Dog, Insomniac Games, Sucker Punch Productions, etc.
San Diego: MLB
Zipper Interactive: SOCOM

All these studios are creating games to PS3 like created for PS2... nothing changed for first-party or second-party (yeah... the second-party is holding with Sony yet: Insomniac Games, Sucker Punch Productions, Quantic Dreams, etc).

The third-party studios was what Sony lose this gen (in terms of exclusivity).

PS. The Sony's first-party studios have to create so much game yet to do what they did in PS2 gen.

"What you fail to understand and many people fail to grasp is that Sony has never, ever, ever, ever been about selling tons of one copy of one game and selling tons of systems associated with it.  Sony and it's library of games are what sell systems.

Sony has never been a company with life-long mascots like Nintendo or Microsoft has been.  Even when presented with the perfect opportunity to market a mascot (IE: Sackboy)  they don't do it nearly as much as the other two."

So this is being don on purpose?  Sony doesn't want a single game to sell too many copies?  If Uncharted 3 suddenly sells 15 million copies and Nathan Drake becomes Sony's mascot, they will be pissed?  Look.  Look at the PS1.  That console got over because of third parties.  There's a reason why people consider Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Metal Gear, Tekken, and Final Fantasy to be "Playstation Franchises".  These were the reasons to own a PS1.  Sure there were a few Sony franchises like Gran Turismo and....uh......hmm.....*mumbles gibberish under breath* but third party is where it was at.  Look at the PS2.  Games like Final Fantasy, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear, Grand Theft Auto, and such were the reasons to own the consoles.  Sure, there were a few Sony franchises like God of War, Ico, Ratchet and Clank, Gran Turismo, and such but once again, it was the third parties and their exclsivity/diversity that made that console.  Sony was never the captain of their own ship.  Hell, the PS2 launched without a single launch game from Sony!!  What kind of shit is that?

Sony is releasing some good stuff, these days.  Maybe they saw that they could no longer count on third parties to be loyal this gen and put the pieces into place years ago to make them successful today--but don't pretend for one second that they're purposely not trying to create a mega-hit.  I think they'd have been exstatic if Sack Boy was the next "Mario".

--And I don't even know why this thread is still going on.  Everybody knows the reason the PS3 is doing so well is because of this guy:

No offense but they aren't trying to make a megahit, it's pretty obvious by their advertisements, if they wanted to create a megahit they would just take one game and advertise it to hell like MS did with halo but they never put all their eggs in one basket, even if one of their games did get a megahit they wouldn't neglict the fans of their other games like everyone else seems to do (including 3rd party publishers) and thats why they are still going strong when everyone is falling off, they are supporting a ton of games which keep getting better (thanks to the hardware) and blu ray and free online don't hurt either, and they are starting to get their 3rd party support back so they are in a hell of a position right now

its cause stream is gonna be revealed soon so wii has droped in sales because of that. and the 360 isnt reallly releasing games. wii is releasing a few here and there. sony had a drought just like this that the other two systems are having. wait till e3 then all will be revealed. and the ps3 will still be at the same spot its been for years. the ps3 hasnt moved much from after theri launch till now yeah they had ups and downs but on average has stayed the same. wii is at the end of its life span i think and that is why nintendo is coming out with the only true 1080p console on the market. and if nintendo is smart they will sell it at 250 and go back on top.

Sony's trolling the industry?

It's the lesser of all the evils. It's the least flawed console, and most people proably don't know much about PSN being down. However now that Call of Duty advertizing is back for 360, people may become more aware of PSN being down. With Wii's new price cut, console sales may balance out for a bit. Until then PS3 is ontop because

360 hasn't seen a major new exclusive since last fall, and Kinect momentum will likely be down until fall, but like last fall 360 will likely sell increadibly well.

Wii is in the same position software, but with the successor announced it's unlikely we'll see new software for the Wii. Then again fall sales will likely make up for the weak sales so far.

DS is down now that the 3DS is out, and 3DS is lacking software so sales aren't strong yet. Also there aren't really any new games comming out for DS.

As for PSP it's also been lacking software, and is basically dead n Americas.

So really software is holding the PS3 up, but this fall that might change. I think this year, all the consoles will come very close with overall sales.

Personally I think 3DS will see the strongest sales this fall, Wii should gain enough momentum to regain leading sales for home consoles, and 360 should be able to close the gap for the second half, but still come thir overall for home consoles.

You're mistaking my point.  Sony has never allowed their titles to reach that status.  If Uncharted were a Microsoft product, you would have Uncharted movies, animations, coloring books, legos, spin-offs galore.  There is nothing wrong that that at all,  but they're driving people to buy their flagship titles.  Sony has such minimal marketing in terms of driving their products.   Sony has more of let actions speak louder than words type of marketing style.  I hear there's going to be an Uncharted movie........

There was Twisted Metal, Gran Turismo, Wipeout, Warhawk, X-Games, Cool Boarders, Crash Bandicoot and tons of other games released.  Tomb Raider was an unknown at that point in time, as was Resident Evil, Metal Gear, Tekken.    The solid first party offerings with some really good third party exclusives lent to PS1s success.  The Sony made games were just as important in the big picture and were highly underrated games even at the time.

Sony didn't make Wipeout (Psygnosis), Toshinden, or Ridge Racer--These were the PS1's big guns at launch.  Tomb Raider was an unknown?  It was an instant mega franchise.  Resident Evil quickly became the best selling PS1 game to date when it launched in 1996.  Final Fantasy 7 was the game that kicked PS1 into overdrive.  Games like Warhawk, Cool Boarders, and such made little to no impact.  Twisted Metal was a success but quickly fell into obscurity.  You had Crash Bandicoot and Gran Turismo.  I mean, I can name a bunch of PS1 games made by Sony.  That doesn't make them classics, console sellers, or success stories.

Again, Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, Socom, God of War series, Gran Turismo series, Shadow of the Colossus, etc.   I will admit that PS2 was a lot more lackluster from first party offerings, but much of that was because the PS2 really dominated from an early point into its life.   It had no reason to worry it had complete third party exclusivity on lockdown.  (The first party developers were there however, with smaller budgets).

Again, good games--a couple of really good games, but not the reason to own a PS2.  Aside from Gran Turismo, which of the games named were the PS2's "Killer Apps"?  Sony wasn't the leader of this platform, either.  They let third parties drive the PS2 ship.

They aren't wasting any and all energy advertising their products.  I don't even know how someone being remotely genuine can argue that.   Besides the occassional Sackboy beanie or plush toy at a Gamestore,  how much Sackboy is shoved down your throat?

Advertising is a waste of money?

I mean my god,  I've drank Master Chief Mountain Dew for the past 2 years,  saw Halo animations, Halo coloring books,  Halo Megablocks,  Halo special bundle packs with Master Chiefs helmet, Halo posters, Halo Slurpees,  Halo T-shirts,  Halo standees in the gamestore for months on end,  Pre-Halo beta codes in about 12 other games.

Look no further than PS Move versus Kinect in terms of advertising budgets.  PS Moves release date was almost an unknown event,  Kinect has a $500 million dollar marketing campaign.   And Nintendo stamps Marios name to just about every and any game that is published by Nintendo (And have for several generations).

Why does everyone keep saying that Microsoft's entire marketing budget ($500 Million) is the Kinect marketing budget?  And again, why are you trying to make it seem like Sony has done some noble deed by making a new peripheral and not being able to sell it to the public as well as the competition?

I believe Sony wants consumers to think of 'Sony' the brand more than that company with Sackboy.  Where as Nintendo wants consumers to think of them as 'that' Mario company.

To be honest, I don't even know what we're debating, here.  I just wanted to get the last word for some reason.  Agree to disagree?
