The thing is, with the start of this gen, most of those third party franchises jumped ship.  Their games became mult-plats.  Sony WAS FORCED to step their game up.  They did a hell of a job, too!  Sony is pumping out some of the highest (if not THE highest) quality games on the market.  Games like GoW3, Killzone 3, Unchated, and such are just plain incredible.  It may not be Sony Computer Entertainment that makes a lot of them (Quantic Dream, Naughty Dog, and Guerilla Games kick ass!) but they're released under the Sony banner and their quality cannot be denied.

My point is, it was simply allocation of money.  Sony developed a stronger first party this generation due to circumstance,  but it was there even during the PS2 days (Just with not with titles that didn't have huge budgets).   PS1 had a very good amount of first party offerings, however.

I have to disagree.

I think their first party studios this gen was the same like last gen... nothing changed with Sony's first party after alll... Sony is not spending more money with first party than last gen.

Look...

Naughty Dog: Crash Bandicoot -> Jak & Daxter -> Uncharted
Team ICO: ICO -> Shadow of Colossus -> Last Guardian
Santa Monica: God of War
Liverpool: WipEout (and a lot of others games)
Guerrilla Games: Killzone
Evolution: World Rally Championship -> MotorStorm
Polyphony Digital: Gran Turismo
Cambridge: Some games for all PlayStation Family
Team Soho: Some games for all PlayStation Family
Japan:  A lot of games for all PlayStation Family
London: A lot of games for all PlayStation Family
Bend: Syphon Filter (nothing to PS3 yet)
Foster City: Just to help first/second party like Zipper Interactive, Naughty Dog, Insomniac Games, Sucker Punch Productions, etc.
San Diego: MLB
Zipper Interactive: SOCOM

All these studios are creating games to PS3 like created for PS2... nothing changed for first-party or second-party (yeah... the second-party is holding with Sony yet: Insomniac Games, Sucker Punch Productions, Quantic Dreams, etc).

The third-party studios was what Sony lose this gen (in terms of exclusivity).

PS. The Sony's first-party studios have to create so much game yet to do what they did in PS2 gen.
