Forums - Sales Discussion - Analyst: "Weak 3DS launch spells doom for Sony's NGP."

Seece said:

Nintendo fans - "NGP is doomed cos handheld sales are down!"
Sony fans - "NGP is gonna be a success cos 3DS is "failing"!"

Microsoft fans - "this doesn't mean anything"

Logical viewpoint - "this doesn't mean anything"

For once, I agree with the MS crowd

Its to early to call either device  a failure. And the 3DS had  aslow start? Thats news for me. I do believe that expectations where way to high, but thats what happenes when you launch a successor to the best selling gaming device ever !

Seriously Hunter, the people on this site have gone crazy, and nice to see you still being a sane one.

Everything Rol/Kramer is saying here is dead-on accurate. Despite the fact that this is April 1st.

Just remember all the people that are predicting this stuff beforehand, and when it plays out this way, then re-evaluate your perception on how consoles fail or succeed.

3DS will become market leader, but will sell MUCH less than DS. NGP will be a significant player, but will sell MUCH less than PSP. If the current gen systems sell 180m and 80m, maybe the next gen ones will sell 100m and 50m. Roughly speaking, it will be that kind of a decrease.

And this will NOT be because of tablets/smartphones. Tablets, smartphones and Facebook will NOT develop to replace games-first devices and platforms, even though many analysts will claim that this is what is occurring. Instead, 3DS and NGP will fail on their own merit.

Maybe what would be best for Nintendo is if NGP comes out for $175 with Gran Turismo and Monster Hunter at launch, plus a response to Brain Training bundled with the system, and goes on to crush 3DS. Then Nintendo would have to regroup and come back with a true successor to DS instead of a handheld successor to N64. (Hint: this won't happen.)

you were fine until the crack about a true successor and n64 comment

the ds already was doing 64 graphics, and the 3ds is doing at least gamecube levels.  you are blind if you can't see this

I don't think so. There's one thing that Sony's NGP that's going to make handheld gaming utterly awesome.

DUAL ANALOG BITCHES

You say that as if Japanese games would significantly gain something from a second analog stick. Remember, that's where the top tier support will be coming from. The Western gaming industry sees handhelds as second rate gaming machines.

Where did I once say that? I said handheld gaming meaning ALL.

Exactly, and that's the problem. Japanese games are a part of "ALL", the most significant part at that.

Beside side scroller nearly all japanese game benefit from dual analog.

Lol wut? If 3DS does GC level graphics... And GC was the successor to N64...

But I'm not exactly talking about graphics anyways. It's about the games, and the overall philosophy and direction of the company.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

And btw, it's not too early to call this stuff. Anyone who doesn't make some general predictions by launch isn't much of a prognosticator. Even before the system launches we can see the philosophy and direction of the company, and the basic plan for the system. If you need months and months of numbers to see where things are headed, you don't understand the concepts.

you mean the direction of wanting to please the hardcore crowd, and also trying to get 3rd party's interested

Well, he said Angry Birds is as big as Super Mario Brothers. So yeah.

Angry Birds has sold over 100 Million.

"Super Mario" has sold like 40 Million units on the Wii this gen and about 35 Million units on the DS.

So how is he wrong? Can you explain to me please?

He said that Angry Birds is as big as Super Mario Bros., now is 100 million the same as 75 million? Nope. He's wrong.

Thanks, that's all I needed to know.

We won't go very far with that logic.

Above: still the best game of the year.
