Forums - PC Discussion - PC gaming is dead-- long live PC gaming

I love his movie reviews but I'm usually not a fan of Movie Bob's Big Picture, though I figured this one could make for some fun conversations.

Having trouble with embedding, so direct link!

The problem isn't PC gaming dying, it's game quality going down the shitter because of the influx of what I call "lowest ocmmon denominator" groups of people. The same reason Twilight, Jackass, Transformers, etc. sell is because of the same exact reason. That's the problem with gaming.

Hmm, probably. I'll massage a few more years out of this box before I switch to a laptop.

Tease.

Bullshit.

PC gaming will not die.

And cloud computing won't catch on, and consoles will never be the media hubs of the home.

Seems like the video creator was just some console fanboy who hates PC gamers.

I LOVE ICELAND!

As long as all those other platforms remain closed and proprietary, I don't believe PC gaming or PCs in general will die.

This right here. ABsolutely everythign he mentioned is worthless and a terrible piece of tech because of this very fact. Companies SORELY want you to abandon your PC so they can rail you any way you want, because they can;t pull that shit on the PC which is an open platform. Xbox LIVE is a perfect example. Props to Microsoft's massive balls to even attempting to port such a lakluster service, and then ask to be paid for it as if it was actually something worth the money. I don't think people would use it if they paid people to use it.

You forgot to add that arcades wouldn't die, and the PC IS the future of gaming to.  You know those old consoles like the Atari 2600?  They were just a fad I tell you.  The PC is the future, and who needs a 3D card anyhow, as the PC has enough horsepower you don't need to add a graphics card, because the PC can handle it.

Anyhow, another factor playing a role in issues of the PC as a driving platform for AAA titles is that the costs to produce a AAA keeps going up.  This limits people breaking into the industry to be able to compete (one reason to do PC gaming), and also the need to recover costs.  Piracy plays a role here to regarding the PC as a platform for gaming also.

One of the biggest things hurting PC games is there's nothing that enforces quality.  While Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo may have closed systems, that closed system lets them enforce a measure of quality.  The process is different for all three, but there are basic requirements that say the game must work and be above a certain bar.  PC has nothing like that.

Because of that, more time is spent on the console versions of a game and the PC is just kind of there.  If something gets fixed in the process, cool, if not, oh well.  More attention is *always* put on the console versions if there is one because the big three can say no, you can't release this game but you can release whatever you want on the PC.

Now it's obviously in the developers best interest to release as good of a product as possible, but when it comes down to the wire and you have a minor bug that keeps your game from getting certified on a console and a major bug that makes the PC version crash, the console bug will be fixed and the PC one will be put further down the list.  Always.

Except that that's the whole point. The PC is an open platform. Someone controlling your platform automatically puts hardware one notch done from open platforms. Then again go ask Apple how they are doing great with their iOS. Oh wait, Android is selling more now? I am SHOCK I tell you, SHOCKED.

Another thing about open platforms, moddability. Even if you find some broken logic to discount the countless hours modding communities add to a game, some of the biggest names in gaming come from mods, hell ont he front page you can go find out Valve came about from modding. Can't have any of that on a closed system.

As for piracy, I already made a nice thread about it here with a nice study:
