Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo ruined gaming-official (so did Apple)

http://www.destructoid.com/game-devs-blame-nintendo-and-apple-for-ruining-games-195757.phtml

''While GDC is often a place to celebrate videogames, there's plenty of room for complaining, too. Nintendo and Apple were both targets throughout the show, as a number of game devs slammed their business practices and the way they've helped to shape gaming.

"We used to have a free and open game business," said EA founder Trip Hawkins. "And then Nintendo came along and introduced a thing called a licensing agreement ... At least Nintendo had the courtesy to tell you upfront that you were going to be screwed."

iOS developer Natalia Luckyanova said that Nintendo's licensing model made it tough for small developers to make a game, and noted the arrogance of the company for criticizing mobile game development, as Iwata had done at his GDC keynote speech.

Apple has been accused of over-encouraging supply, with 350,000 Apps available on iTunes and little chance for the majority of them to compete. In addition, the company charges developer $99 per year and takes 30% of each transaction. Hawkins noted that Apps make $4,000 on average, which "doesn't even pay for a really good foosball table."

While I agree that Apple and Nintendo could stand to loosen up a bit, I'm interested to know when the industry was a better place. Back during the Atari days, when the industry crashed thanks to a slew of unlicensed crap? It's easy for developers to lament the way things are run now, but I'm not totally sure it would be even better in a Wild West market.''

...wut?

Am I the only one furiously laughing at the screen due to irony that it's EA complaining about Nintendo 'screwing them over'?

I'll go play my inferior versions of Dead Space, Need for Speed and all sports games now then thank you whilst the HD consoles get the 'good' games

I think someone needs to 'silencee' EA from making such stupid comments if they don't try. Sure, if Capcom said it (or, even Nintendo, which they did) then it would be worth listening to, but a developer who haven't really tried to capitilise on the console complaining? They get what they deserve IMO

Already made a thread talking about Apple, I shalln't repeat myself

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Around the Network

Trip Hawkins can say whatever he wants, he's a legend who made some big mistakes but also contributed hugely to the industry. He's a member of the Hall of Fame of videogames for a reason. Inferior versions of EA games on Wii is not Hawkin's fault.

Natalia Luckyanova can say whatever she wants, she's pretty, has a sexy name and creates apps with cute icons no one knows.

By the way: Why are Nintendo fans/system owners often posting anti-Nintendo news? Must be masochism.

I found this matter interesting when it came out on GDC. Reggie previously had some comments on mobile games devaluing their value, and Iwata concerned with the avalanche of apps in which 90% are free.

I really don't think there is much concern. I myself see iOS as flash games that you pay to use offline. Sure there are exceptions with apps that have gripping story, graphics or gameplay that can last for hours. But the big hitters are those one trick bite-sized games that even I enjoy! Those types games have existed before and they didn't implode the game industry. Though I can see Iwata's wake up call with 300,000 content made available at a standard price of 1$ or free, how many of those developers can make a living?

You say tomato, I say tomato

"¡Viva la Ñ!"

gah Not one company or even 2 can destroy gaming. If any is at fault it would be closer to EA and Activision with their endless amounts of same games different year philosophy

...because I'm not a  Nintendo fan?

I'm just a fan of gaming in general, no comany holds closer to me. (Well, fine. It's between Nintendo and Sony...)

So that way I have no beef posting good, or bad,  news for any console

And negative Nintendo news bring traffic, so, that's usually the only thing that's available to post.

Corelation does not causation.

seriously EA are the ones destroying their own company with shitload of releases.

eg Need For Speed. They said they would take a break for 2-3years after the first on ethat launched on PS3/360 sold badly. They csaid they woudl reinvent the game. Since then they probably released about 4-5 other Need For Speed games.

Go figure. They say one thing and do another. COD will suffer the same fate for Activision.

Err, so Nintendo is bad for not really allowing small developers to make a game, but then so is Apple for allowing too many small developers to make a game?

There's always the PC for free and open business, incl. allowing small developers to do whatever... but then again wasn't EA having a fit about PC gaming recently?

EA pretty much hates nintendo, because well they couldn't really do well in that market, EA pretty much seems to have problem with PC for whatever reasons. EA as a business is doing horribe, when compared to (Ubisoft and hell, even Activision (who also had one bad quarter.)

If EA continues down this path, only a matter of time.

The author pretty much said it all right there.  It is also interesting that Nintendo is singled out here when all platform holders have licensing fees.
