Forums - Nintendo - Mark Rein: If 3DS could 'deliver' Unreal Engine 3, we'd be on it

You know, if someone really wanted Unreal Engine they can just license Unreal Engine 2. I mean for those who played the Red Steel series on Wii that used UE2 and it looked just fine.

Heck, that was even an updated version of the engine.

A lame excuse trying to hide their obvious anti-Nintendo bias. It's no secret to anyone that Epic is anti-Nintendo and their previous statements pretty much reveal this.

No just Red Steel used Unreal 2.5, Red Steel 2 used LyN Engine aka the engine used for Rabbids Go Home/Turtles in Time a few months before Red Steel 2.  Also suspected to be used in Beyond Good and Evil 2.

Basically it's showing the engine scales very well much like the Half Life 2 engine, but I'm starting to get away from the original topic here.  The series doesn't use the Unreal Engine but rather just the original.

like i said in the other thread , Unreal Engine is useless, its meh , and its a resource monster, the only good thing about it is that it is cheap.

Not sure what you consider not "meh". It is an engine and there are some good games on it. So depends on the developer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Unreal_Engine_games

there are a lot of games using it , because like i said, its very cheap , its the cheapest "HD" compatible engine on the market, so if developers looking for more profit but more buggy engine and dark glossy jelly-like shaders, they use this.

to me, this

Looks better than this

and one of them is 5 years older than the other.

Unreal engine is one of the reasons why some people find games nowadays so "Grey", colorless, grainy and unispiring

It's still down to the developers how the engines are used though and to be fair, there is a lot more happening (in terms of normal & bump maps, texture res, detail and lighting) in the second screenshot than the first. Valve just have a great art team with amazing animators. If given the Unreal Engine 3 I have no doubt they could re-create Half-Life 2 and have it running on similar hardware. Also, that screen looks like it's from Episode 2 which is an updated version of the Source engine with HDR, hardware facial animation etc.

Also, a lot of Unreal Engine 3 games are not "grey" like Mirror's Edge and Enslaved. As I said before, it's the developers primarily, not just the Engine that decide how good a game looks and runs.

Speaking of Unreal Engine, guess they added a ton of DX11 features

Epic and Mark Rein are anti-Nintendo. It's been that way for years based on his comments and actions. I don't understand why people just don't accept it. Why he himself wont' just admit it so people can leave him alone.

Almost every major game engine developed has been ported to Wii and now 3DS (or in the process thereof)...except the Unreal 3 engine.

And there is not a damn thing special about the Unreal 3 engine that prevents it.  The talk of shaders or need to completely redo everything is bullshit.  Plain and simple, Epic has no intention of putting their engines on Nintendo consoles for some irrelevant reason. By the way, Epic didn't do the porting of UE2.5 to the Wii, Ubisoft did.   So Epic couldn't even be tasked with that much.

It's not a technical reason...it must be something else.  Either something more personal and, frankly, childish.  Considering the verbiage used by Rein in previous statements regarding Nintendo, he reminds me of a spoiled fanboy and I wouldn't doubt it at all that he simply has an immature bias against Nintendo.   The other factor is financial.  Nintendo isn't known for throwing 3rd parties money for exclusive rights like Sony and MS do and it wouldn't surprise me if Sony and/or MS helped fund the porting of the UE3 engine to their consoles.

I think Epic is suffering from an affliction I call "Presteigitis" (coining it if it's not been named yet). It's a step up from attention whoring and fame hunger, as it's craving a specific kind of attention and fame, which is prestige. It's common accross many entertainment media.

Nothing matters more than prestige when you have this, not your health, not how enjoyable the work is (and some suffering from this would say that's even a detriment to a work), not even the bottom line. Look at how acclaimed games that sell less than two million are considered bigger accomplishments than unacclaimed games that sell five times that much.

Or take how EA seems to think getting good reviews matters more to them than the fact that they've been losing money for years.

This also relates to Nintendo. Some developers can't see prestige in Nintendo systems, at least not the prestige the gaming industry gives. So they find ways to spin the systems as more risky than systems that make their games more expensive, and find ways (even if unconsciously) to sabotage the few token efforts they make for these systems.

The last sentence seems the most relavent. Of the three console manufacturers only one of them has never worked with the Unreal engine in any form. I'll let everyone try to figure out which company that is.
