Forums - General Discussion - Book Thread: VGChartz gotta start readin'!

My threads still going, I honestly thought it'd would have been dead by the 15th page.

I'm reading the Conan Chronicles, it's alright, nothing to freak out about.

I also read Marketing Metrics, it's probably the most boring book ever created for no reason at all.

I went through 'Green Eggs and Ham' and 'The Lorax' again, wasn't to bad, they are both fairly intelligent books.

Congrats! I think this thread is the most successful book thread ever on vgchartz.

Just finished 'A Dance with Dragons' (which was fantastic).

Started 'Hyperion' by Dan Simmons. It's not quite what I was expecting as it reads like a collection of short stories linked by central narrative. Good though.

That is exactly what makes it so great. The writing style changes for each of the stories. Its quite a remarkable feat imo.

As for stories, just continue with the other Hyperion books.

Just finished it. It felt like he'd had these great ideas and written them as short stories over a period of time, hence why the writing style changes for each character. I could be wrong but that's how it read. Worked well, but it was a bit bizzare going from first person in one character's story to third in anothers. I've got the rest of the Hyperion books so I'll read through.

Another book for my thesis.

A book thread! Excellent.

Just finished the latest Philip Pullman "The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ". As expected I found it well written, with simple but very effective prose. I do worry Pullman is going to end up with half the extremist Christians in the world hounding him, but it was an interesting take on a core element of modern Christianity and a useful examination of how time does have the ability to change facts into myths and expand on what happened to what is remembered.

Also reading Jared Diamond's "Guns, Germs & Steel". A non-fiction examination of the last 15,000 or so years of human history seeking to unravel why the world is the way it is now, why certain Western countries dominated as they did and what were the underlying causal effects.

I think I'm going to move onto something a little lighter for my next read - perhaps a thriller or something of the like.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

A book thread, eh? Sounds good to me!
Anyway, I'm reading Volume 2 of the Complete Sherlock Holmes Collections and stories at the moment. While I tend to prefer fantasy over mystery, it's been a pretty fun read so far, so I'll probably be done by this week's end. After that, thinking I'll keep going with Tad William's Otherworld books (ready to start the second volume). I've been a pretty big fan of him for awhile, so I'm hoping this holds up in comparison to some of his other works that I've read (especially the Shadowmarch books, love those!).

Song of fire and ice is serious junk. george martin is seriously fucked. the characters are shallow and hollow...he turns to cheap crazy things to try and give them depth...oh look [character] fucks a black chick and talks about licking semen off her own face and fingers while referring to them as people see how deep her character is now! most characters can be summed up in just a few words...some even less.

his main plot driver happens to be the murder of main characters and introduction of new ones (some who only last a couple chapters). i like murdering and maiming main characters...it creates suspense when they get into dangerous situations... but its more surprising when the characters dont die...except that since they are alive it means they still have the opportunity to die. mass character wipeouts should occur near the end or at a few critical moments throughout(large battles for example). murdering them pretty constantly throughout just makes it expected.

Wow, this sounds terribly lame. Guess it all goes downhill after the first book.

I sincerely disagree with M. Bubbles, for the record. The series is excellent throughout.

I'm inclined to take his word for it, mainly considering I didn't really enjoy the series in the first place.

I'm reading the latest Darwin Awards and Foundations Edge by Asimov.

I also just bought every single Tintin comic. Going to read them all in anticipation for the film.

Now reading The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket by Edgar Allen Poe. It is the first book assiged in my english class this semester. IT is a bout a stowaway on a whaling ship that get mutinied and all the strange adventures that happen afterward. The book is not that long, I am almost half way done. It is not a bad read the only thing that sticks out is the lack of dialogue which is one of the things that gets to me about Poe.

Sidenote: We are required to read 9 plays in my theater class this semester which should be interesiting, most plays are a breeze to read. We also have to watch three live performances.

lulz, this doesn't bode well for me, I've just started reading from the first book, If it's as bad as you say then the next 750 pages are gonna be hell.
