Forums - Sales - NGP could outperform 3DS if price, innovation and games are right

Except that innovation doesn't matter nearly as much as eveybody thinks. It also won't "get price right", if it supposedly does, it still is a hollow victory since making profit is the reason to sell hardware, not selling more units or breaking records. And it won't get games right because every game shown only catters to the core gamer, I don't see anything there that would push a non-gamer to buy it.

On the other hand, Nintendo is making the same stupid mistakes, so there could be a chance.

Above: still the best game of the year.

no way..NGP was dead on arrival last year when we knew jack about it remember? It won't have dev support yada yada yada :D oh good times of fanboy threads

Sony has done everything right so far, games are good (from what lil we know of it)....dev support has been nothing but impressive so far, features fans asked for plus things that actually create interesting gameplay possibilities....

So who knows...I fully expect NGP to do better than the PSP...but DS brand name is huge...but then again, this is an industry where leaders fall from former grace all the time..tho some tend to forget that

oh and I think NGP and PS Suit are a combo package in their plan...time will tell how it works out

Most people tend to overstate that, really. Going by handhelds, a leader has never fallen, so we might as well quit this debate. Going by home consoles, a change of leadership has only happened every two generations and, each time, there has been a very good reason for it. NES won 'cause of industry collapse - not happening here. PS1 won 'cause of optical media, weakened Nintendo franchises and "mature" games. Nothing on that scale looks likely here. Wii won 'cause of PS3's ridiculous initial price, motion controls, revival of Nintendo software and shared DS base. No way NGP's getting anything close to that.

Other than 3D blinding people and mass controversy over this occurring, there's nothing grand enough to turn the tides against Nintendo in this handheld generation.

I think tablets are going to steal a lot of market from these portable devices. There is just so much more you can do with a tablet and they play some decent games that are getting better every day. It's not a two horse race anymore.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

see few things,,I never stated that in a way such as such things happen every other weekend or something...just saying, it may not be likely, but it has happened before

Ninty is not a perfect company, they can and have made mistakes to, will they make mistakes this time, who knows

before psp, there was no one to even challenge Ninty on the handheld market, and with possibly around 70mil LT sales in HW, PSP did just fine.

We still have lot to learn about NGP, remember last year when Nintendo fans were making thread after thread how is the PSP2 is DOA, Why PSP2 will fail, SOny needs a 3d screen to succeed, Devs won't support the psp2 etc etc? And yet here we are, talking of the NGP can actually beat the 3ds...reason? NGP has impressed so far and sony has done really well. THings change fast.

And mind you even I don't expect NGP > 3ds in sales LT....but I find it hilarious how some fans who say haha ppl thought ps3 will rule coming off of PS2 and yet wii is in the lead now, forget it now. So again who knows, with over 75devs onboard (probably increased by now too) excluding 1st party support which looks to be way stronger than it was for the psp, NGP is off to a great start. And I think as fans both sony and Ninty fans should be happy, next gen handhelds are gonna be GREAT no matter which side you choose and healthy competition will always lead to better results for the fans themselves!

I can't wait until TGS, cuz only at the end of TGS will we have a good idea of the NGP line up of games and other aspects like price, a VERY good year for gaming :)

OMG! Do you work for a tablet company, or something? I have seen you post these redundant comments on every single handheld discussion.

Of course, they can make mistakes. But predicting one when it is in no way likely is just a waste of time. The world could end tomorrow, couldn't it?

PSP, depending on how you judge it, could be anywhere from a complete failure to extremely successful. It may have challenged Nintendo in the market meaningfully, but it did not replicate the PS1 as some may have expected.

Also, you're giving Nintendo fans far too much discredit. I don't recall any such threads and only Pachter called PSP dead on arrival. The only reason we're discussing this ridiculous possibility is because some people are getting too hopeful. The NGP has impressed Sony fans, but that hardly says anything about its sales, as is shown by the PS3.

Honestly, the Wii>PS3 in sales despite PS2 has nothing to do with this case, as I gave you the reasons for it in my last post. "It happened before so it will happen again" is the worst logic imaginable when there's little else to back it up.

I'm not against all fans being, happy, though, :P. We're just supposed to be discussing sales so I'm not bringing it up.

I am basing my opinion on what I see.

What I see is people buying phones and tablets for themselves and letting their children play games. The whole paradigm on how people are gaming is shifting.

This will impact the next generation of devices significantly more than the past generation. We are already seeing these smart devices supass PCs in growth. Most of the growth will occur in the phone/tablet market not only in gaming, but technology overall.

oh trust me, ask anyone who visited Sony forums post-E3 last year..there were plenty of threads / posts on it :) Searching for threads on this site is hell if not I would have looked some up for you (seriously, I even predicted Tales of G F will come to the west when everyone said no, tried to find that thread for AGES :( ) but trust me, not making this up, it was utterly annoying...if you look above you can see even darth is agreeing to it...Patchy joined the doom and gloom way later, but he is an idiot and I expect no less of him..on ANY matter.

Like I said it may or may not happen...can go either way, completely ignoring the possibility makes no sense no does it?

and no, sony fans weren't happy about ps3 release like this..AT ALL. Most even jumped ship to other consoles. So far there has been absolutely nothing for fans to complain about. See I'm referring to fans and not fanboys. I think sony effed up ps3 launch big time...they could have done way better with psp too....but so far they have done many things right, heck even the few titles we know of, I predicted most of them :P (was more like a wishlist)

The reason why wii has such a huge lead over ps3 is simply because sony messed up with ps3, plain and simple. Again, keep an open mind about this, anything can happen, and I personally hope both do really well.

psp was not a failure, it doesn't have to beat DS and have the same success story of ps1/2 of beating Ninty to be considered a success. For sony it's a success, hence the NGP. And if you read dev interviews, there were quotes where they said how they made money off of psp as well, which should be obvious by the huge line of dev support NGP is getting 'already' ...I think it will be close 100 when it's all said and done (5bp just hinted about NGP as well btw)

And I 'personally' think Ninty are doing some mistakes with their device already..but getting into that cuz it will take us in a whole different direction so I don't want to get into it here

Nintendo has to completely abandon their innovation and games and go on vacation for a year for NGP to beat it.

Either the NGP will have installments of the major third party series already announced for the 3DS, or not. (FF, DQ, KH, Resi, MGS, AC).

If it doesn't, it automatically loses because it has no games.

If it does, it's likely they won't be ports of the 3DS version or vice versa. So it comes down to which platform the developers put more effort into. It's hard to say which that is going to be.

So, can you see any of the games I listed being better on the NGP, or better on the 3DS?

POINLTESS QUESTIONS

ah damn work and having caps lock on for it.  but that question  will come down to peronal bias.  you will have tons saying those game NEEEEEEEEEEEEED the best graphics in the world.  you will have tons saying whichever system they PREFER.  You will have those saying ....., you get the point.

the DS has had a main dragon quest game on it.  neither has had a main any of the others you listed. they have all been spin offs essentially.  So tough to say whichever gets them wins, cause in past neither had them at all, again besides dragon quest.

btw what does AC stand for?  only thing i can think of is assassins creed, but not sure why you would bring up that mediocre game, so guessing it must be something else.
