Dear Vgchartz,
I'v noticed a very disturbing pattern with the new handhelds.
Wait. Before we start, since most posters here have the attention span of a goldfish, I'll make a short version so you can understand without resorting to the clique ""To long, didn't read!"" *insert gif*
Short version-
Handhelds are meant to meet a demand that consoles can't do, pick up, play quickly, long battery life, be affordable. Graphics may take a hit from this but because of lower and easier development budget its less a risk for the developer and the consumer. It also allows the developer to come up with something new instead of being lazy and porting console games over. Its the reason why handhelds since the gameboy have kept outselling consoles because of this. 3DS and NGP are not doing this. This sucks.
LONG VERSION! WARNING WORDS! READING IS HARD!
I love handheld gaming. I use to first play on the cheap tyger movie cash games like the terminator 2 all the time before I went on my trip to the united states. There I ran into a something that would be around me most of my life and still sit comfortably in my dresser preserved, the original Gameboy.
I, love, the gameboy. Traveling over states mostly to see family and living with older siblings, the handheld allowed something that consoles couldn't do. Personal gaming time. I use to charge batterys by leaving them out in the sun just to cram in more gaming time. I am a handheld fanatic.
The DS, I own more games for this than I proberly do any other system. Being region free and the glorious era of buying games off the internet the library was more open to me than the older days of gaming. It was cheap, it was affordable and lastly the games on it that used the systems strength were just flat out fun.
Yet, I cannot get excited for the 3DS, or the NGP even though I owned a PSP and a DS. Because I know exactly what handhelds are becoming. Wannabe consoles. Just like how consoles want to be like PC's without the ease of use and internet porngraphy, handhelds are now taking away what made them great over console counterparts with basically ""meh, screw it, everybody does the same thing.""
I love the new graphics, I love the downloadable titles to the systems, but I don't like...
Shorter battery life. Higher prices for hardware and software. Console ports on handhelds. Region locking. All these are a serious problem, I don't want to spend that much money because its a handheld and it should COST LESS, I know I can get the games elsewhere being some are ports, the shorter battery life means I won't take the system anywhere, lastly that amazing door that open to the vast library that the DS offered is now closed and chained off. Wow, I legally buy your product and you punish the customer, thanks Nintendo.
I don't want a portable console. Neither should anyone of us if the consquence of the new ""handhelds"" is us to pay more for less.
