Forums - Sony - The PlayStation Move is doing phenomenally - EEDAR Analyst

Difference is Kinect's 6-8m retail sales means 6-8m individual households, whereas 4-6?m Moves means probably 2-3m individual households when you consider multiplayer and most households would have probably bought two.

Now, I haven't checked and that 4m number above could be unique in the first place, but I think I remember it being total sales not, unique users. If I'm wrong then to me they are about that same.

Eitherway, I want to see this year's sales before I declare either being massive successes. I think looking at 360s 4million jump in YOY proves kinect and slim did something for its userbase, but PS3s far more meager 1.5m YOY increase really is just a result of the 1st half of the year still seeing the difference of the previous year's slim/price change and absolutely nothing to do with Move.

So with that in mind, Kinect might be the far bigger accomplishment here.

EDIT: for clarification PS3 xmas 2009 was statistically equal to 2010, further demonstrating Kinect's success for X360 vs Move's for Ps3.

I think the point was just to show that the Move is a success. It was stated several times that Kinect is doing better.....

1.29 million in 2 months is phenomenal, compared to 7.2 million? Move did not do well at all compared to the competition. They shipped 4.1 million, but only sold 1.29 million. That's a lot of Moves still on retail shelves.

You keep spreading this lie. Please stop. That article was for unique users, not controllers sold. There are not 2.9 controllers on shelves.

Im not sure if I would say phenominal, probably just very good sales overall. However I guess we'll see next year what kind of userbase it can develop overall.

Tease.

Move did great but it was overshadowed by Kinect for being less innovative, less hype and quite similar to Wii as well as lower sales. But i see Move have better lineup than Kinect (currently) and more appeal to hardcore gamer. Sony did great move by making their most popular franchise compatible with Move.

Also, that 4.1 mil figure was for the end of Nov '10, so I'm guessing it has shipped quite a bit more for the holidays in Dec.  And the unique number article is old as well, so the number has gone up since then.  Not to mention it's only an estimate, so may not be accurate.

Sony had a press conference at CES BEFORE Microsoft's.  They had a perfect opportunity to tout the sales numbers of Move for the holidays.

They did not.

To be completely honest, as has been discussed, the difficulty of establishing how many Move enabled households they're are out there tempers any announcement that they could make.  But to give a number of 4.1 million shipped in late November as a response to Kinect's initial numbers and not give an update at an event as big as CES is ... I'm sorry, it just doesn't paint a very confident picture whether its accurate or not (see MS being coy about WP7 sales for example).

The reality is that this product has been out since September and, after months of mocking Wii and Kinect in PR quotes and advertisements, was likely unable to put up sales numbers that compare.

Thus the silence from Sony.

Yep it has done quite well and exceeded what I thought it would do.  I've always considered everything about Move to be very safe and without much risk on Sony's part.  And while I don't think that isn't true, they sure were able to get some good sales out of it.  Hopefully in 2011 they will take a few more risks and make it even bigger.

And on another note, after playing Move and Sports Champions at Winston's, I must say I think I want one haha.  Only thing stopping me right now is 3DS haha.  Got to save my money for that haha.  Can't say I'm too interested in buying Kinect though.  One's a space problem for Kinect and the other is an interest problem.  Oh well, for both they will be taking a backseat to 3DS so will have lots of time to decide later this year.

I was at my local kmart the other day and i overheard the employe in the games aisle talking on the phone and he said as soon as they get their new moves they sell out immediately i went to check out if theyre any at all... sold out. So if moves are selling out is small towns like mine where the majority of people are xbox fans especially at my school then its doing pretty well.

I think we need to give it more time. Holidays are but a small sample of a year and usually aren't representative of long-term trends. We've seen it with the Wii which is very strong during Holidays but slows down a lot afterwards.
