For what it's worth by the way, in antiquity, one of the most feared military units of the Era was gay.

It was seen to add to their ferocity and competance in battle because the Egyptians saw how fiercly people fought for their own family and wife... and figured "Hey what if we had a whole legion of gay people who loved each other".

They were considerd Egypt's best infantry unit... well until Alexander the Great took them out.

I just did, but I'm not persuaded by those arguements.  I have little doubt that a notable minority of the military will be disturbed by this move, and perhaps there will be some short-term disruption, but multiple modern armies function just fine with openly gay servicemembers, and I don't see why in the long run we'll be an exception.

Moreover, I would point out that similar arguements were raised in order to oppose integration and women in the military.  I'm aware that both of those groups still meet discrimination in the armed forces, especially the latter, but I don't for a moment believe that those problems are insurmountable, and our military has continued to function at a high level even with the resulting discrimination.

If they want to serve openly then more power to them, but why would they want to? I agree with the repeal, but my fear is that were going to see more incidents of discrimination pop up. I was in army for a very short time,so I know how some people are. So let me honestly ask the gay member's of vgchartz, why would you want to serve openly in the military and take the chance of getting discriminated against are possibly beat down bye some young punks. I'd hope that would'nt happen, but the military is a rough enviroment. Let me stress again,I have nothing against gay people and there desire to openly serve in the military if they so choose, but I just have concerns of were this is going to lead. I'm just trying to play devil's advacte and have an honest discussion about this.

It's true that a gay person in the military may want to remain on the down low to avoid discrimination from their peers, but at least now they have the choice of coming out if they see fit.  Just because Don't Ask Don't Tell was repealed doesn't mean every gay person in the military has to come out, but it's much better for them to have the option if they want to brave the reaction of their friends, family, and the general community.

The thing about DADT was that if it was found out that you're gay you would be discharged. I'm sure not every gay person who wants to join the US military will go aroung broadcasting that they're gay, but it will probably be nice to know that they don't have to worry about being discharged if theyre sexual orientation is discovered.

Also, the people who would give gays a hard time are the problem, not the gays themselves. They should be the ones who are thrown out.

Your career path is to be a homophobic soldier?

I'm glad this finally got through, the situation as it was made no sense.

Because they're proud of who they are? The way to end discrimination isn't to hide, it's to stand up.

@Kasz. And in the Greek military of the era (especially I think the Spartans?) it was also very common for there to be soldier lovers. They weren't gay as such from what I've read - they had wives and children back home - it was just considered not to be unusual for them to have a lover amongst the other soldiers while on campaign.

Wait that was an official policy?

And if you couldn't tell that was sarcasm, turn down the self superiority and read a book about "manners" and such.
