Forums - Sales - Increasing Likelihood of 3m Wiis Sold in US in Dec

- 600k BF week. Wii in Dec tends to match BF week sales.

- Epic Mickey push is pretty much entirely in December.

- Walmart has Wii at $150 for at least the Dec 5-11 week (i.e. buy Wii w/ its 2 bundled games get $50 giftcard).

- Walmart has Wii at $125 for Dec 17-Dec 19 (buy Wii w/ its 2 bundled games and get $75 gift card)

- Kmart has Wii at $150 for at least the Dec 12-18 week (i.e. buy Wii w/ 2 bundled games get a $50 giftcard)

- Target has Wii at $177 for at least the Dec 12-18 week (i.e. Wii and 2 bundled games for $177)

- Best Buy has Wii at $180 for at least the Dec 12-18 week (buy Wii w/ 2 bundled games for $200, get $20 giftcard)

- Toys R US has Wii at $150 for the Dec 19-Dec 25 week (buy Wii w/2 bundled games for $200, get $50 giftcard)

- Best Buy appears to have Wii at $125 for the Dec 19-Dec 25 week (buy Wii w/2 bundled games for $200, get $75 giftcard)

- With 3.8m Wiis sold in the USA in Dec 2009 (by NPD), 3m in Dec 2010 would still amount to a large (20% ) drop off.

- Wii also ended up more than quintupling (5.5x) its Oct sales level in Nov sales in the USA, rather than doing the usual x2 to x3, and so a larger than normal x2 increase from Nov-Dec, ala last year, is likely for Nov 2010 to December 2010.

Last year was 520k - 1260k (x2.5)- 3810k (x3) for Wii by NPD, this year looks more like 232k - 1270k (x5.5) -3100k (x2.4). With at least two of five weeks seeing strong promotions, and Wii higher than we initially expected (200k ) in November its not not impossible for a 3.5m (!) December again.

What did it sell December last year as a comparison?

Could this be Wii's Swan Song Source???

i dont think it will sell 3M , i think Wii = 2.8M and 360 = 2.5M

Depends what you consider a swan song. Its likely the last 3m December we'll see for a while from any system in the USA / Americas, as Wii will be down next year and 3DS will cut into DS.

My assumption has always been Nintendo would cut the Wii price in Spring 2011 to $150, and launch Zelda in Nov 2011 with filler content (Mario Sports Mix, maybe Pikmin 3, Rhythm Heaven Wii, Xenoblade) a couple third party items (De Blob 2, more Udraw games, Conduit 2, et), and possibly a player's choice line to keep interest going by tapping the late adopting, price conscious masses who bought PS2 after 2005. If Wii is $150 for Nov-Dec 2011, and Zelda launches, and then retailers offer more discounts ala 2009-2010, buying a Wii with two games could be as little as $100 - an absolute steal. So I wouldn't write off holiday 2011 yet - Wii is just entering the point that PS2 enjoyed in Nov-Dec 2005-2007, where it became the cheap legacy system with lots of cheap software.

I don't think a 2m December in 2011 is out of the question yet for Wii.

Wait, what? Doesn't VGC have Wii for December at a little over 3.8m for Americas? Does US really become such a huge proportion of sales in the holidays?

20% drop off from last year sounds about right

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

3 millions is good enough for me.

Above: still the best game of the year.

I think there should be no doubt that the DS and Wii will be the top selling game items this christmas.  I first registered a few months back and I was surprised at the amount of people claiming the wii was dead and that it would be last in the holiday sales.

The wii is imo this generations PS2 (barring the mature and 3rd paty content the latter saw) but it is very much the"go to" console for most "casual" gamers and a price drop next year will only further cement this.

The Wii is now in its 5th Christmas and it can still sell 3 million in December?  I think it is doing just fine, especially for such a technologically inferior console lacking in so many important 3rd party blockbuster games. The Wii is running on fumes but it will probably still win 2010-- it may not be growing but it is sure chugging along at a profitable pace.

It will do just fine in Dec. 2011 as well-- a price-cut will work wonders.

Most anticipated games of 2011:
