not sure how accurate the source is, but here Yochi Wada states FF13 should outsell FF7. if i can find more than one source with the same thing, it will be hard proof i think. of course, this was a long time ago, when they released it couldnt happen, they lowered it to 6 mil.
at the moment i accept this is not proof, its only one source, but still...
Thats an interview with gamingunion.net versus the 6 million figure quoted at a shareholder meeting. You take the interview with gamingunion.net as "hard proof" over figures given at a shareholder meeting? Ok no point in discussing this further now.
Well, I wouldn't.

I am assessing the credibility of both sources. At least the gamingunion.net interview proves the company has serious issues in PR, Wada sounds like he's drunk in the interview. It seems to me like he said that to hype it through the roof and didn't have any justification. The 6 Million figure given at the shareholder/financial meeting seems to be thoroughly researched and well thought out, hence why it was quoted by major gaming sites like Gamespot, IGN and more.

Yeah. Like I said, I couldn't remember the exact context of the link where he mentioned the 10 million figure. But now that I saw it, it does indeed sound more like your typical hype.

you can think what you want. Nobody's stopping you.
I can want to be god, but that doesn't make it so. But I'm god anyways.
Fair enough, my point was that i think, imho, Wada and SE wanted 10 mil units sold; to reach the sales of FF7 and i think FF13 was meant to be the biggest FF. i'm not saying thats true, thats just how i felt around the hype and the marketing, using Leonia Lewis's star power, instead of the original song, the big annoucement hype, massive launch events, (i actully have my copy signed by Kitase and Kamiyoko when they came to England, and it was huge). thats how i feel about it i'm not saying i'm right.
you can still be a god though.
thanks ;)
I'm not denying wada said that. He did in fact say that. I'm just taking the stance that he was talking out of his ass without consulting his marketing team or whatever. without evidence ofcourse. Since, atleast in some of my experience, bosses like to do that.
I'm jealous of your copy though ;( and you dont' even like the game! haha
i think ffunion even lets you listen to the interview, so i'm quite certain this is good proof, because the site from before was just a forum post.
and secondly the FF13 western announcement trailer.
4.19 mins, "Final Fantasy 13, quite possibiliy the most anticipated game of all time"
i cant find it but there is another youtube video out there where Kitase says FF13 will exceed ALL expectations. and Toriyama has also said that FF13 is intended to be the best single player RPG ever. so you cant say it wasnt hyped. not to mention all the other things i mentioned, like when they compared FF13 to Call of Duty, or the Leonia Lewis marketing campagain here in the west.
now based on this, i strongly believe that FF13 was meant to be bigger than FF7, and meant to be the best selling JRPG until the next big FF. so okay this is my opinion, fair enough, but i think its well justified. and i think they adjusted the prediction down to 6 mil, when all the reviews came trickling in and when they saw the preorders, etc.

That makes two of us.
lol, i wouldnt feel to bad about it. because when the development team launched in Japan and US, they had Toriyama, and a few more people, all we got was Kitase and Kamiyoko. and i missed the FF12 one, which i wouldve liked to have gone to because Ammano was there i think. although it was an awesome launch, worth every miniute sanding in the que.

The one where they said 6 Million was made at a major conference in September 2009, before any reviews came out. Your link is from a gamingunion.net interview (which is definetely full of again PR/hype), it is not credible enough to say that is their expectation and ignore what is said at an investor meeting. I never said the game wasn't hyped, but you act like past titles haven't been hyped or marketed, FF9 had advertising with coca-cola, FF8 had the 9.9.9 slogan, FF7 had a $100 Million marketing campaign. That whole video you just showed me is full of PR and marketing hype. Its not really a matter of opinion, the fact stands shareholders were told the game was expected to sell 6 Million, the news was widely reported across credible gaming sites. Time to agree to disagree.

Did you ignore the whole post, gamingunion.net was a forum post, i linked you to the source of the interview, which was recorded.
thats not what i'm saying, you said that FF7 and FF10 were hyped more, when imo they've hyped FF13 more. okay FF10 might have been more hyped, but about the same as FF13 level i think, FF8 and 9 and 12, were no where near this level of hype. the Coca-cola ad was only for Japan. FF7 $100 million marketing campagain with Sony was because no one in Europe and few in the US were aware of FF, that dosent count as hype imo, because FF wasnt known in the west.
yeah shareholders were told to expect 6 mil fair enough. i'm talking about what SE wanted, okay they said 6 mil eventully, but do you really think that SE dosent want another success like FF7 again?? it ridiculous to think that people dont dream about exceeding their previous successes.
i'm not refuting that 6 mil is what they expected, but imo, and theres proof i used to show this, not to mention massive marketing, 5 years of development, etc. that before they decided on 6 mil, they began production with the aim to make FF13 bigger than FF7 and sell 10 mil copies.
