Wow some surprisingly high scores there.  I'm going to have to bite my lips on this one I think.  Actually, to be honest, for the most part I'm going to have to bite my lips on all the prequels.

Still.  Wow.

Don't be, this movie enchanted a whole generation of us.

You fools!

Just teasing.  Besides, it's because some of you clearly really like it I will be bitting my tongue a bit in my criticism - I hate to sound like a spolier of others enjoyment.

haha you can do it if you want!
I still like Empire Strikies Back A lot more (than any star wars for that matter) But my brother tells me how much Episode 1 sucks and reasons (that make sense) why almost every day :P

Plus you should flame darth... to get revenge for him flaming one of my games! that darth!

Well you're quite right about Empire, it is the best Star Wars film, it sounds like your brother is right and has some good taste and I guess I could maybe lightly toast Darth.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

LoL, so many bad ratings, I saw this coming when I saw the thread title to be honest. Anyway...

9/10

I liked it quite a lot and watched it many times. It was not my first Star Wars movie, I was already a huge fan of the old trilogy and normally I like the idea of showing how everything began. The only bad thing about it was... Jar Jar Binks (expected, isn't it^^). The Jedi battles were cool, the space battles were really good, pod racing was great, etc.

I'm done.

It's the herd metality of a generation who no longer looks through the eyes of a child, but through the eyes of the jaded, "everything needs attitude" and witty one-liners generation they became. I'm guessing if at some point Qui-gon and Obi Wan had done a slow-mo, walking-away-from-a-huge-explosion-with-our-backs-to-the-flames scene the movie would have gotten a lot more approval from my genertion.

10/10 for me. Depending on my mood, it can be my favorite SW movie.

PROS....

Seeing Anakin as an innocent kid full of dreams and eager to help others

Kickass battle at the end

Duel of Fates music

Podrace

Love those droids

Finally getting the first glimpse of fully trained Jedi in their prime

Rebreathers

The beginnings of Palpatine's plot

Natalie Portman

and of coruse...Qui-gon!

CONS

Listening to the constant whining of the vocal minority

Needs more Jar jar

It was well below average from what i'd expect from a movie... and weirdly tried to combine "kids stuff" with "galactic political intrigue".

Which meant you had half your audience bored at any time.

Lots of dumb plot holes.... including ones they open up in future movies.

Like why doesn't Obi-Won remember the droids.

At least the story was somewhat coherent though... and that was basically it.

Combining "kids stuff" and "galactic political intrigue"? Hmmmm, kinda like those other movies...oh crap, what were they called...oh yeah, Star Wars EpIV-VI.

Obi-won doesnt remember the droids? Or Obi-won doesnt act like he remembers the droids? Or maybe there more R2 and protocol droids in the galaxy than just Threepio and Artoo?

To be honest, the initial meeting between Luke and Obi-won was always slap full of mystery to me. I always got the impression that there was much more that Obi-won wasnt telling us/Luke. The tidbits he dropped about his past with Anakin and the Clone Wars, and the way he reacted when Luke told him that Artoo was looking for him. I never got the impression as a kid that the "I dont seem to recall ever owning a droid" was a straight-forward statement. From the very beginning, Obi-won was mysterious, elusive, and selectively truthful.

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

I give it a 4.5/10.

First, the good:

Darth Maul

Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan.

Lightsaber fights

The Bad:

Jar Jar Binks

Retconning the past (Vader made 3p0?? Obi didn't remember the droids? )

Jar Jar Binks

Try and rewatch the time on Tatooine. It feels like they're on the planet for 4 hours.

Jar Jar Binks

The Dumb:

Jar Jar Binks

A planet run by an ELECTED child.(and attempting to make it seem like anything but a ridiculous idea)

Making Padme so much older than Anakin. Did anyone not realize that the love story was going to be terrible in the following movies? "Up next - Ms Padme Bangs a Boy"

The reason for needing to pod race - Watto being unwilling to accept Republic credits. Really? It takes very little time to travel across the galaxy, and there's no place to exchange currency in a SPACEPORT? You're saying a greedy guy couldn't charge an arm and a leg and then go get the money converted to valuable goods? Qui-Gon had a large sum of money, but it was turned down, no negotation. If a mechanic was charging someone $3000 for repairs and they were like "I have 25,000 canadian dollars." Would a mechanic tell them to take a hike? Or lick his chops and make out like a bandit?

Besides, there's a planet  under an aggressive blockade which attacked the queen's vessel and attempted to murder a couple of Jedi Knights. The situation isn't pressing enough to use "aggresive negotiations" to obtain a hyperdrive? Apparently putting a child in danger is somehow less objectionable.

But I digress...

Yes, I think 4.5 is quite generous.

7/10 It had a weak story and weak character development.

That's quite the generalization you've got there.

Next time, go easy on the turbo.

By kids stuff... I mean things for 4-5 year olds.  A lot of the stuff in Phantom Menace could be straight outta Yabba Gabba or something.

The older starwars kids stuff was actually congruent with the matieral.  Like say a Justice League cartoon or even like Ben 10.

Political "the world is in trouble" intrigue DOES NOT work when you make the threat a bubling idiot army of droids.

I mean it's a wonder those trade federation droids can conquerer the act of going from one room to another without exploding.

I do have the same issue with ROTJ though.

With the Ewok's beating the stormtroopers, but at least it's not prevelant and happens only towards the end of the movie at the climax so it takes you a while to ask things like...

"Wait... did a wooden arrow the size of a stick just go through combat troop armour?"

Also, the Ewok's were just supposed to be this primitive stupid race of teddy bears.

Not the scourge of the Galaxy.

I feel like I personally could take down a squad of droids.

Please, PLEASE, watch all 7 parts.  It is long all considered, but it will really, REALLY, make you reconsider that "somewhat coherent" bit. Starts slow, but it is both hilarious and unbelievable.

There are even some parts that show Lucas while making the movie, relaly telling about how bad the fail was.

By somewhat coherent I meant I understood what was going on from scene to scene... not that the story made sense.
