Making Padme so much older than Anakin. Did anyone not realize that the love story was going to be terrible in the following movies? "Up next - Ms Padme Bangs a Boy"
The reason for needing to pod race - Watto being unwilling to accept Republic credits. Really? It takes very little time to travel across the galaxy, and there's no place to exchange currency in a SPACEPORT? You're saying a greedy guy couldn't charge an arm and a leg and then go get the money converted to valuable goods? Qui-Gon had a large sum of money, but it was turned down, no negotation. If a mechanic was charging someone $3000 for repairs and they were like "I have 25,000 canadian dollars." Would a mechanic tell them to take a hike? Or lick his chops and make out like a bandit?
Besides, there's a planet under an aggressive blockade which attacked the queen's vessel and attempted to murder a couple of Jedi Knights. The situation isn't pressing enough to use "aggresive negotiations" to obtain a hyperdrive? Apparently putting a child in danger is somehow less objectionable.
But I digress...
Yes, I think 4.5 is quite generous.
