"Another time, a mod asked me to report another member for a fairly innocent post, so that member could be punished, simply because the mod was tired of him. Again, what the hell?"

Ha, I know who that stinks of, yeah spill the beans.

I agree, just because we're on the internet doesn't mean you need to be a dick.

Above: still the best game of the year.

why not? lol

Hi. I'm Randy McDoormat and I approve of this message.

Now to actually add something.

The masses are generally unintelligent and it shows even more on the internet as their is a great lack of censorship and moderation here in comparison to the real world. Thus, their lack of comprehension and common sense becomes more apparent. My city was rated amongst the world's most intelligent places (I think it's been in the top 5 for the last few years and rated first once: http://www.cigionline.org/articles/2007/05/worlds-smartest-city) and all I see when I look around is morons. It really worries me because this is supposedly amongst the highest average of intelligence in the entire world and it's still plagued with complete idiocy. I probably sound pessimistic and filled with hatred against the state of humankind and in all honesty I probably am. But then I remember that if it weren't for all these people around me there'd be no lulz. And that brings me to my point: T3h interwebs iz 4 t3h lulz! Just relax and enjoy it. I think you put that point very well.

Plus 1 Internet for Rainbird. Plus 2 for everyone else in this thread :P

EDIT: Stupid plus signs. You desecrate my posts again with your incompatibility. Alas I have fallen to my greatest foe.

On the internet, people either show who they really are or who they want to be.  Some people are dicks in real life so they are dicks online.  Some people are nice in real life but since there's little reprecussions online, they use this opportunity to show their asshole side.  And other people are men that want to be women, cool, or sexy space ship captains.  It's a really diverse mix of personalities.

I try to present myself as real as I can be (this is my chance to be the person I can't be in the real world  where I have to act hard, scary, and professional) and say the things I can't say in the real world (secrets, opinions, etc.) so I wouldn't dream of trying to be a dick to anybody.  But I guess there are those that can't help themselves.

If you're anything like you're in here in real life, you must be extremely good company!

Such is life and the interwebs, we just have to live with it! I see it as partly our responsibility as veterans of the site to post with tact and tone to set an example, the older members are almost always worth a read!

We do have a lot of good new members as well, of course but I see a lot of people with 5-50 posts, no avatar and generally bad conduct go into threads and post short, ill tempered flamebait to rouse the other users into foul language and anger (this especially happens in the weekly sales threads as of late). Personally, I only very rarely report someone and I've been reported only twice myself. I intend to keep it that way!

Perfect fix for the new member thing: You know that new functionality which prevent users with fewer than 100 posts from making threads? Stop them from posting, too >_>

I suppose you're right, of course, but it's always the trolling, flaming newbies (and they do tend to be newbies rather than veterans nowadays) who stand out - I suppose, because they're in such a small minority.

Anyway, Rainbird, a very  well-thought-out and sensible post, but also pretty obvious

(Former) Lead Moderator and (Eternal) VGC Detective

About the whole "It's the internet" argument, that's pretty stupid to be honest. It's like saying "Everyone is poor, why is that?" and the answer being "They live in Africa". Silly stuff.

Regardless, I think you guys are missing my point. It's about your state of mind as a whole and how you approach posting here. Why go about it with a negative attitude if you can go about it with a positive attitude? That's the question I want answered.

And I agree with Mummelmann, old members of this site should set an example for new members to help the forums stay at a high level. And that's exactly what I'm doing with this post, telling people that there is no reason in the world to feed the troll (the bad kind of troll anyway, funny trolls are different ), and no reason to expect bad things from people.

And yeah, to some it might seem obvious, but others are probably oblivious to it. Some times you can't see the forest for the trees after all.

Bro, I'm an advocate for fairness and positivity, so I appreciate what you're trying to do here. Perhaps people should go about things more positively, but it's crazy to expect that to happen. Older members should set an example, absolutely, but positive results can't be expected without negative ones to accompany them.

And I don't expect things to turn all joyful from one moment to the other, I'm just trying to make people think about how they go about things.

Do you honestly like heated fanboy arguments? Do you feel happy when you're a part of one? If no, then why even get involved?

There's nothing wrong with a well reasoned discussion, but if the discussion concentrates on butting heads, then why bother?

I'm not in support of a heated debate that's not civilized and relevant, although I'd argue that heated discussions are healthy for debates and the forums in general. No matter how much we advocate for positivity and fairness, however, there's always gonna be a few that aren't willing to abide by that. So you have to accept it and move on. Your intentions are genuine, and you deserve credit for it, but you have to grip the reality of the situation.

If these things were as easy as 1-2-3, they'd fix themselves. But as long as man exists, these things will never be solved so easily, no matter how much you campaign for change.

Not in a million years.

I think you're missing the point here CGI. I'm not saying that VGC needs to reach a utopian high or something like that, I'm just trying to make people think about why they post the way they do. And there's nothing wrong with a heated discussion as long as people are actually discussing things legitimately, I'm all for that.

I'm totally aware of the situation here and I'm perfectly aware of what we're all dealing with. I'm not campaigning for change like this to happen over night, but change (large or small) has to come from somewhere, right? Why accept status quo and move on, when things could be better?

I must admit that the VGChartz forum dwellers are actually amongst the most knowledgeable and refined that one could hope to find on the internet.  We aren't perfect but the vast majority are pretty civil.
