Forums - Nintendo - The Malstrom thread 2: Revenge of the Lapsed Gamer

I'm trying not to be a negative nancy but this topic has twice as many invisible posts as the last one and it's still on the first page for me.

If you think it's too much of a pain to do, I would gladly make another topic, and flesh out the OP to be a kind of introduction to Malstrom.

Let's see what can be done here, but if it comes down to it, at least make sure the introduction is neutral.

Another thread on Mr. Malstrom, as the first one is just glitchy in the response alerts. Also, his name isn't misspelled, for those of you wondering.

You don't have to agree with him, but let's at least try to be civil, and understand that some people just agree with the guy, and not because he said these things, but because they see where he is coming from.

Also, I don't know how to embed Youtube videos (used to, until the new posting system), so I'll just note where they are, and you have to click the links to see them.

Most people on this site don't agree with Malstrom, at first I was baffled why, since he seems to have far more intelligent insight than 99% of gaming "journalists" and analysts and provides a refreshing counter point to their near unified and narrowminded opinions of the hardcore. But now I understand why many people here dislike him/don't get him. It's because Malstrom represents the oldschool gamer/expanded audience, while most people you see on gaming message boards are obviously still active gamers playing modern games. So obviously they won't see eye to eye with him. Most of the lapsed/oldschool gamers like Malstrom don't really have their voices heard because they generally don't post on sites like this, and are generally not gaming journalists.

I see myself as somewhere in between. While I still do enjoy some modern games, there are less and less games that are catching my interest, and I find myself going back to many retro games, smaller XBLA/Iphone games and having more fun with them than with modern games. So I can definitly see where Malstrom is coming from.

I think he really has some valid points about how developers are really the ones leaving gamers behind, not the other way around. I find myself not having the patience to getting into the more complex/cinema heavy games these days.

He is also litterally the ONLY person that predicted the Wii to be a major success, which is something worth noting :P

I use to be part of the 100 few members of his board. Had to take a break since it started to feel like a cult. Everyone agreeing with everything he says all the time. When it comes to business, and industry insight. I agree with him, and believes he notice things the expert don't. When it comes to his games ideas as in how they should be. I'm totally against him since he seems just as hardcore as the people he said he is against.

Just because someone is saying something different. Doesn't mean their point of view is right!

I agree when he discusses some points. Shoehorning and railroading in games annoyed me well before I found his site. So I agree with the general concept that "We want you to kick ass" is a superior design philosophy than "We kick ass".

So I'm not the only one I see. When I first saw the game, I thought it looked like trash. But looks can be quite decieving. I must have clocked in around 24 hours of playtime the the past 3 days, and I rarely play games for longer than 2 hours in a single sitting these days, but I think Minecraft has proven that the reason for that is because most games these days just aren't as fun.

I have spend countless hours just building my awesome impenetrable castle, and only this morning have I begun to discover gold and diamond. I've spent much of the time mining undergronud below my castle, and it's just incredible how much you can discover and how deep you can dig. I keep discovering new caves underground, pouring several hours into one portion of one cave.. and this is all just one island! I've barely even ventured out to other islands so far.

Between this, Diablo 2, Starcraft, and soon to be Starcraft 2, my PC is providing my with all the gaming I will need for months to come, and lately has made my Wii60 very sad and lonely.

Minecraft is user generated content done right.

  • It has plenty of content on its own, instead of just depending on you to make the game.
  • You can use the content of the world to make stuff, instead of just pulling stuff out of a menu.
  • It gives you a reason to make your own stuff (Build or die).
  • The tools are simple, yet offer loads of uses.

There are ways to apply these to other games.

Let's say Wii Music 2 had a plot similar to Elite Beat Agents. You have to do good remixes in order to solve problems, just the remixes are still your own. You merely have to meet some requirements for the scoring. Now I understand the point of self scoring, but I'm an artist, and get the point of "Be your own worst critic". Most people wanting to have fun with the game won't get that, and shouldn't have to. Thus the scoring for this would be to get the point of how to do remixing, and thus solve the problems.

Or what about a Halo game where using Forge is vital? You'd get a junkyard full of tools, and you need to make an adequate fort to defend and channel the upcoming invading forces.

ARGH curse Malstrom for making me addicted to Minecraft and taking away 24 hours of my life! Why oh why is this game so damn addicting?? Alll you do is mine and build! This game totally exploits my desire to build massive structures.

There is already a perfectly fine reason to build maps in forge.

To make kickass Zombie maps :P
