Minecraft is user generated content done right.

  • It has plenty of content on its own, instead of just depending on you to make the game.
  • You can use the content of the world to make stuff, instead of just pulling stuff out of a menu.
  • It gives you a reason to make your own stuff (Build or die).
  • The tools are simple, yet offer loads of uses.

There are ways to apply these to other games.

Let's say Wii Music 2 had a plot similar to Elite Beat Agents. You have to do good remixes in order to solve problems, just the remixes are still your own. You merely have to meet some requirements for the scoring. Now I understand the point of self scoring, but I'm an artist, and get the point of "Be your own worst critic". Most people wanting to have fun with the game won't get that, and shouldn't have to. Thus the scoring for this would be to get the point of how to do remixing, and thus solve the problems.

Or what about a Halo game where using Forge is vital? You'd get a junkyard full of tools, and you need to make an adequate fort to defend and channel the upcoming invading forces.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
