Valve: We've been profiting since like, forever. Didn't you lose billions of dollars in the console business?

Microsoft: ....

Microsoft: Could you make money not depending on MS products?

Valve: ...

Microsoft: Your welcome. MS didn't become what it is depending on video games.

Of course Valve could make money if Windows didn't exist. They would simply make their games for whatever OS was most famous.

No, I said could they make money NOT depending on MS. I didn't create a scenario where Windows doesn't exist.

MS brought the audience, Valve depends on it.

That's history. The audience is already here, and it's not going away no matter what happens to Microsoft.

We can sit and debate the history of MS's contribution to the PC audience all day, and I agree it is a valuable contribution. But that doesn't really matter nowadays.

Bottom line, Valve is not dependent on Microsoft.

Well my point is Valve depends on MS.

Nintendo for example doesn't. But Valve does.

Here is the email I received:

Dear LeonnSpoon:
Thank you for being a valued member of Xbox LIVE Gold. We hope you are enjoying the many exciting and exclusive features that are included in your membership. We wanted to let you know about an upcoming price increase for your Xbox LIVE Gold subscription and how you can lock in your current price to continue enjoying everything you've come to love about Xbox LIVE, plus all the upcoming additions, including ESPN and Hulu Plus.
Over the past seven years, Xbox LIVE has evolved from an online gaming platform to an all-in-one gaming and entertainment service. As an Xbox LIVE Gold member, you can not only play blockbuster games, such as Halo: Reach with your friends online, you can also stream movies from Netflix* and music from Last.fm right to your TV. You can even connect with friends near and far on Facebook® and Twitter™. Plus, you also enjoy exclusive discounts and early access to game demos.
And we aren't even close to being done. This holiday, Xbox LIVE is adding new Gold features, including ESPN and Video Kinect, with Hulu Plus coming on Xbox LIVE in 2011.
With ESPN on Xbox LIVE, you can stream and watch over 3,500 live and on-demand sporting events plus highlights.*
Video Kinect allows you to chat with family and friends on the big screen, right from the comfort of your living room—no headset or controller required.*
With Hulu Plus on Xbox LIVE you will be able to enjoy a customized Hulu Plus experience that will include Kinect navigation and Xbox LIVE Parties*
Besides launching the new features and titles, we will also be increasing the price of Gold membership on November 1, 2010. The new prices are as follows:
Old Price New Price
 1-Month Gold Subscription $7.99 $9.99
 3-Month Gold Subscription $19.99 $24.99
 12-Month Gold Subscription $49.99 $59.99
If the renewal date on your current subscription is on or after November 1, 2010, your subscription will automatically renew at the new price, charged to the credit card we currently have on file for your account.

At only $5 per month, our 12-month offer continues to be your best value. And, because you are a loyal member, we want to give you the opportunity to lock in your current price with an additional discount.

I can understand the math. At $60 per year, I am paying $5/month for a Gold membership. I am fine with it and will reup my subscription.

What I don't get is if they are mentioning new partnerships with ESPN and Huluplus, then wouldn't they be getting some sizeable revenue from EPSN and Hulu for allowing them to advertise on Xbox Live?

Why pass the price on the consumer when the popularity of the service pays for itself with contracts with major network players such as ESPN?

I am confident the advertising revenue alone can pay for the upkeep of the system. Microsoft just used those new advertising contracts to rationalize an increase in subscriber fees because they have short-term quarterly profit forecasts to meet.

Valve: Hey Microsoft, wanna partner with us to make a service that could put PC Gaming over the top?

Microsoft: No, your idea is 10 years too soon. We don't want to have anything with you guys.

Valve: You are losing a great opportunity.

Microsoft: Whatever, we are going to consoles. We aren't focused on PC games.

2006

Microsoft: How's business?

Valve: Steam is all over. And you guys said it couldn't be done.

Microsoft: But aren't you giving Steam for free?

Valve: Yeah, which is why getting million of new costumers.

Microsoft: Whatever, PC games don't sell. Consoles are where the money's at.

Valve: But didn't you lose billions with the Xbox?!

Microsoft: Yes, but our idea was to win the console industry with the Xbox 360, not the original Xbox.

2007

Microsoft: Hey Valve, I'm launching GFWL! It will be a stronghold for PC gaming.

Valve: Cool, but what is GFWL?

Microsoft: It's like Xbox Live for PC, and you to pay to use it too.

Valve: What the hell?! PC Gamers won't pay for GFWL ever!

Microsoft: Whatever, we forced millions of console gamers to pay for nothing, PC gamers will too.

Valve: It won't work. PC gamers can't be forced to use GFWL.

Microsoft: We'll win, many big publishers  are already supporting us.

2009

Valve: So how's GFWL?

Microsoft: Badly. No one paid for it, so we had to make GFWL free.

Valve: I told you.

Microsoft: Whatever, PC Gaming is dying. We're closing down all our PC studios.

Valve: WTF?! That's insane! You'll regret this.

Microsoft: PC Gaming is dying, and the money's on consoles.

Valve: You should stop reading NPD numbers...

2010

Microsoft: *reads PR statement* "PC Gaming is important to us. We are always committed to PC Gaming"

Valve: Huh?!

Microsoft: We are coming back in full force to PC Gaming! We are releasing new games on PC, and GFWL will be a stronghold for PC Gaming.

Valve: I've heard this before. Have you even released anything in the past 3 years on PC?

Microsoft: No, "but we are committed..."

Valve: Dude, look:
- You lost billions with the original Xbox.
- You are losing billions with the Xbox 360, and are nowhere near the Wii.
- You closed all your PC studios.
- GFWL hasn't improved since launch and is still complete crap.
- All publishers that supported GFWL have abandoned you, and came over to Steam instead.
- You haven't released a PC game for years, and won't release before 2011 (if at all).

Microsoft: We thought PC Gaming was dying...

Valve: PC was the only platform to grow in 2009, and 2010 so far. It has always been growing. It was your fault for only reading NPD, and now Steam is so big that we are on MAC now. HAHAHAHA!!!!

Microsoft: You showed us Valve. PC gaming now dominates the gaming industry!

Valve: Haha! Yeah right, people don't buy PC games. Worst of all, the most popular PC games don't even come to Steam.

Microsoft: SAY WHAT!!! You mean you don't get any of that World of Warcraft, The Sims, or Stracraft money?

Valve: Not a fucking penny!

Microsoft: PC gaming is growing... but its just bullcrap like Farmgames, casual crap, and MMOs.

Valve: Yeah pretty much. So how is GFWL going?

Microsoft: Shitty ofcourse, its PC gaming. How else could it go?

Valve: You know, we should have got together and made video cards. Every video card sold just goes to pirated games anyway.

Microsoft: True dat!

This is funny c'os you make Shio's post sound reasonable, lol

The funny thing is that I wouldn't mind paying for Xbox Live if I actually valued online gaming. Since I don't a once a month (if that) entry to PSN is all that I need/want.

Tease.

You have a weird concept of dependency. A company is not dependent on another when its products would be able to exist and sell if the other company ceased existing.

Well WIndows exist and Valve depends on it.

They wouldn't get rich just putting their games on Mac and Linux.

Right now Valve depends on Windows, and if there was no Windows, Valve would depend on something else. It just wouldn't be Windows. Luckily Valve has released a Mac client as well and isn't as dependant as it used to be.

This is a question whose MS really doesn't want to know the answer...

Right, Windows and 360 haven't been the bread and butter of Valve.

SW houses need one or more widespread environments where run their products to have a big potential user base and revenue, but it doesn't by any means need to be made by MS. It happens to be so, and to have been so since Windows became the dominant OS (before, alternatives to MS-DOS and to PC architecture itself were in comparison a lot stronger than successive alternatives to Windows), but whatever else, if widespread enough, would do.

Microsoft: damn let stick it to them and use Inflation as an excuse...  ha, ha, ha

Sony: what inflation ?  I care about the economy, I let the player play online for FREEEEEEE !! ain't that the standard no?

Microsoft: but if I let online for free for Silver no body would have an interest in upgrading to gold ..

Sony: so your using online gameplay which is free on my console to lure gamers into paying for apps that they dont want nor need but still have to pay that fee because thats the only way they would have access to online gameplay?

Sony: lol...more like fishing?

Ms: Shhh!  shut up! Sony, I dont want them to know, but that how business goes.. otherwise they all would be silver members just to play online for free and than ignore gold all together ..

Sony: thats F'ed up , yo!

Sony: I'm adding apps here and there and making it for PSN PLUS for those who are willing to upgrade and gain an edge over the basic users for extra contents and free stuffs..

MS:that sounds cool but understand this, pay to play COD black Ops and halo: Reach online, or miss out, dude they have to pay me first to play nad its been working since so why change.

Sony: keep doing what your doing, -I will add extras, free stuff, apps for a premium, but I will keep whats the been the norm and that is, let my users feel free anytime they want to play online.

Microsft: u suk!...

The public: VOTE for Sony Campaign..

Microsoft: What's your finacial situation this generation? Selling those PS3s like you expected?

Sony: ...

Microsoft: Well you guys still rolling in that PS2 money, right?

Sony: ...

Microsoft: Well you still must have PSP money, right? Those things sold like hot cakes.

Sony: ...

Microsoft: PS3 hardware ate all that money up? Ouch. I imagine PSN Plus is a big hit. All the great stuff you get, people must be signing up like crazy.

Sony: Well... we give the best PSN features for free.

Microsoft: ...

Sony: ...

Microsoft: Are you even trying to make money?

Sony: But we can make money doing everything you do for free.

Microsoft: Really?

Sony: No...

Never thought I'd actually agree with anything Shio wrote given his track record, but... spot on. Spot on.
