Forums - Nintendo - Ubisoft dev: "Wii is a refurbished Gamecube"

Graphically there's not too much difference between the Wii and the Gamecube, but is sad most of big  studios think this way, that what matters is technology. The Wii was not about that, but trying to innovate and refresh gaming to play in new ways. Sadly this guys don't seem to know how to make good games if they don't have enough RAM and CPU.

Instead of graphic comparisons, we should see the gameplay comparisons.

I don't think images of people waggling in vain are the way to go with this... Frankly, I find that, in a lot of cases, traditional controller-based gameplay is superior to Wii Waggle--especially when said waggle is either illogical or fundamentally broken.

Anyway, I think it's surprising that people are still upset when someone points out that the Wii isn't a graphical powerhouse.  True, it's not a refurbished GameCube, but it is typically jus a supercharged GameCube.  Nintendo's own people have, themselves, said so much.

I think some of you are just really stretching to hate one guy from UbiSoft.  Settle down, and stop taking this shit so personally.  Why does it always seem to go like this:

Dev from 3rd party studio: "We're basically used to developing on HD systems these days and have gotten into a groove where it's almost easier making games there than for the Wii.  The Wii's general lack of power just makes some things more difficult to program and write, and there are restrictions we don't have elsewhere. We can't even use current-gen game engines on there."

Angry Nintendo fan: "YOUR MOTHER!!  Your games suck anyway!  He just hates the Wii, and therefore vicariously, he hates me and he called me gay and kicked my dog!  How dare he point out that the Wii isn't as powerful as the Xbox360 or PS3!  How dare he have an opinion on game development from a developer's point of view! I know better, I'm a consumer!"

This is just nothing to be outraged over.  Also, this post is nothing to be all outraged over because there is some sarcasm buried within.  Luckily, there's an upcoming hot Metroid injection that should cool some nerves.

Either way, like I said in a previous post, I am enjoying my "advanced Gamecube" so I really don't care what one developer states.  Also, just because one developer states this doesn't mean he/she speaks for all of Ubisoft.

I hope this helps with this debate.  If it doesn't then at least I tried :).

I enjoy my Supercharged GameCube as well (I like the term supercharged over advanced, just my preferance).  Maybe it helps that we own other current-gen consoles...

That way, we don't get all wound up feeling like we're "being mistreated by third party companies" when we don't get something on the Wii that is on the Xbox or PS3.  Maybe that's the secret to enjoying the Wii for what it is...  I don't get all wound up if a multi-platform game doesn't come to the Wii, I just buy it for the Xbox360 as nature intended.  And conversely, I tend to enjoy the exclusive games the Wii tends to offer.  Like MadWorld and the RE: Chronicles games.

but it's more logical than comparing GameCube and Wii graphically, because that was not the purpose of the Wii. Well done motion controls can be superior to traditional controls. A new tennis or bowling game without motion controls will look archaic. And don't forget but pointer controls, speaker, one hand control, body balance etc., that's what differentiate both systems.

It's true that traditional controls are better for many things still, but don't forget we are still starting the era of motion control.

This, this and this. It was amusing for a while but it is getting old and pretty annoying.

Yeah, motion control is definitly here to stay.  I consider the Wii the "beta" of motion control, and believe (and hope) that it's use will be gradually improved, made more logical, and made to actually be "fun."  It makes the most sense for sports games, I think.  I love that it, and the pointer, legitimized arcade-style rails shooter games for home use.

I think the speaker and rumble feature of the Wiimote went vastly underused.

So... if you admit that what the guy said isn't true, why are you defending him? The key point of his statement was the 'refurbished Gamecube' part. Had he just said 'the Wii isn't as powerful as PS3/360', then nobody would have batted an eyelid, other than to say... well, duh.

This is a controversial statement? Wasn't it common knowledge that the Wii is little more than an overclocked Gamecube with a RAM upgrade?

...And motion controls, and a different design, and DVD9 media, and Wii channels, and SD card support, and 512mb flash memory, and Wiiware, and VC, and Wii Connect 24, and an entirely new online system, and a web browser, and twice the horsepower of Gamecube, and an entirely different game library than Gamecube. But yeah, it's just an overclocked Gamecube..

People that can't see the differences between Wii and Gamecube are usually nothing more than tech whores who can't see gaming in terms beyond graphical horsepower. For my money at least, the Xbox 360 is far more like the Xbox than Wii is like the Gamecube.

its a developer talking about hardware, not a fanboy about features.

Seriously this thread expresses irrelevant opinions from Ubisoft, any sane person would realise that the Wii is better in every possible way than the Gamecube and the Wii has the usual inspiration from its predecessor. I also look forward to Ubisoft's "Mary Bale: I like Dumping Cats in Wheelie Bins!", it is most likely to be created and Ubisoft are obvious contenders for developing the game.

Edit: I would buy that game, though Mary Bale would disrupt all work on the game.

Again the statement wasn't that the Wii isn't more powerfull than the Gamecube, it is that the Wii is a refurbished Gamecube hardware wise. And since most of it's architecture is indeed identical this still holds true. It's also stated that Nintendo will probably be the first to come out with a new console because of the Wii being least powerfull console of this gen, and that's only logical aswell.

I really don't see anything wrong in what this Ubisoft dev said.

Going to say this and I apologize if it hurts your feelings.  But if you don't know what the word refurbished means, don't reply to this thread.  Several of you are making yourselves out to look quite foolish.  It would be funny if it wasn't quite so sad.

Refurbished means a single unit in non-wroking condition is repaired back to the original working condition.

To call the Wii a refurbished Gamecube is to show your lack of understanding of the word.
