I got a NES for christmas in 1989 I think, but it debuted in 84 or 85, right? 70 million seems like such a smal number, every single friend had one!
Another factor would be economy, late eighties saw an increase in consumers' ability to purchase, which was bound to benefit the PS when it came out a few years later.

My point about casual buyers/consumers is that most of their possessions matter little to them since it's not a wholehearted interest on their account, so they tire easily. This is why cellphone makers, clothes designers and other manufacturers have to update or relieve their products with new models/versions all the time.
And casuals tire most of all of things that do only one thing, especially in electronics. When the first MP3 playback stereo sets became affordable, sales practically exploded, the same is true with TV's sporting features such as i-in-i. Casuals love products that handle multiple tasks, so for most of them a 360 or a PS3 would probably also be cool for a while (perhaps several months...), but the prices are too steep and the hardware itself has a "geek" status in the market somehow, so the only affordable console left would be the Wii.

I see lifetime sales of approx 90-95 million for the Wii, which is nowhere near a fad as many claim, but my experience is that the casual market saturates and tires very quickly, and I fear this can be Nintendo's undoing (not really undoing, they'll still do great, but not by the standards and expectation of many posters here).
It's more than likely that the Wii will "win" this gen, but not so much that it'll sell 250-500 million.

I also believe that Sony will take "2nd place" this gen, which is fine by any standards given the high price and steep competition.
The 360? I have little faith in that product tbh, as did I in the X-box.

This is very true. In fact, I can think of at least one manufacturer that's been relying on this technique for sales.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. It won't happen again.

Lol, it's quite allright Nick, there's a ridiculous amount of PS3 and 360 models around for my taste...

So wait you're saying people will buy it and then tire of it, so what, they already bought it, hence why would it stop selling, people will still buy it, you can't tire of something you don't own, and trust me as long as people keep playing and enjoying the Wii it'll keep selling  Also look at the NES hardware shipments, almost match the Ps1's sales in NA and Japan, but since NES wasn't pushed much in PAL that is where the difference in sales is located, PS1 never brought in the casuals, it just went further into the global market, and PS2 just expanded on population growth and the failure of its competitors

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Mummelmann's argument about the short attention span of the casual consumers is already evident today. Look at the sales of all the top games that have come out recently. MP3, SMG, Zack/Wiki, were all huge under performers compared to the amount of hype (and estimates on this site) that they were receiving. The Wii has far and away exceeded everyone's expectations, I'll give the Nintendo fans that.

Even I have been debating buying one, but I realize that there are only 2 games that I even want on the platform. As much fun as it was at my friends house, mainly because there were a few of us playing at once, after playing it for a while the hype wore off for me. This isn't something I would want to play by myself, it seems really like much more of a social gaming system. Everyone can laugh at each other while you look like a fool waving your arms in the air, whereas I just felt like a fool when I was at his house alone getting down with a mirror right above the TV....oh the memories still haunt to this day.

On a more serious side of things, I just don't understand how people think its realistic for the Wii's demand to keep up like this. I mean, you can't look at an previous market trends to judge how the Wii will perform because it broke the mold in terms of the old adages of console gaming, but it seems to me most of these posts are more wishful thinking, or just trying to rub stink in the doubters faces, just because they have a more realistic view on things that differs with theirs.

Currently Playing:

PS4 - Killzone:SF and Assasins Creed 4

XBox One: BF4, CoD:Ghosts, Dead Rising 3, Forza 5

Well I have yet to see any legetimate reasons why Wii will slow down, you say casual gamers have short attention spans becuase of the fact certain games dont sell, could it be that they just dont care about those games, not everyone likes lord of the rings or star wars for example.  People say Casual gamers will get bored, and maybe they will, but its unlikely since DS hasn't slowed down, and even if they do, so what they'll still buy the system before they get bored

So, all you care about is if people buy the system, not whether or not they play it? Just because people own a system doesn't mean better games are going to come out for it, and if the really good games that do come out aren't purchased, that doesn't leave much incentive for developers to spend a lot of time on games for the Wii. That is why you see so many shoddy ports and budget games for retail out for the system right now. Casuals don't know what good games are. When they walk into the store, they are more likely to buy the game with the most interesting cover art above anything else, as they don't spend their time in game forums and on review sites. "so what, they'll still buy the system before they get bored of it" - that is some sound logic.

First off I don't believe that people won't play it, and better to have them own it and play once in a while than not own it.

Define better, what you think is better others may hate.

PS2 had a lot of bad games as well, the most popular system always has a lot of shovelware .

A lot of games you might dislike they seem to like, Carnival games was very popular even though the hardcore gamers didn't like it, because of differing tastes

Yeah , I admit Carnival games is a surprise hit ... I was never expecting a game like that to sell so well :o
