Forums - Sales - Okay we got to discuss this - Wii/Sales

Quick Questions:

1) When did the PS2 come out versus the other consoles in it's generation?

2) How many units did the PS2 sell in it's first year without the GC, and the Xbox on the market?

End....

I wonder how it would of been if the Wii hit the market 1st....a whole year 1st

1) Find it our yourself, maube from wikipedia. Every console launched in various dates in different regions.

2) 10 million.

But what does that have to do with anything?

I wonder how it would have been if ps3 launched at 200$ or xbox had no rrod or.. whatever.

So The Wii is controlling this generation as much as the PS2 was.

Ps2 marketshare: 74%

Wii marketshare: 48%

Third party support: Not even close

Can't find any figures on total software sales but I think ps2 dominated the market on that aspect with close to 70% marketshare. Wii has less than 45% share of the software sold this gen.

How is wii controlling as much as the ps2 was?

It's not.

It's also worth noting that the PS2 had more competition... With the Dreamcast, Xbox and Gamecube. Wii only has 360 and PS3 to contend with.

OT:
As I have said before... I wouldn't be surprised to see these following things happen on a regular basis next year -

NA - 360 > Wii > PS3
EMEAA - PS3 > Wii = 360
Japan - PS3 > Wii > 360

I also wouldn't be surprised if we saw a Wii replacement from Nintendo ready for the Holidays 2011. Wii support isn't looking all that great, and they will try to launch Super-Wii with the same kind of support the 3DS seems to be getting.

I totally agree!

But a super-wii won't get the type of support the 3DS is getting.

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

It never ceases to amaze me how creative people get when attempting to undermine the Wii's success..

People say it's a close generation.. Is it? I don't really see a 31 million console lead as close, especially when its  next closest rival came out an entire year ealier. I mean Super NES beat Genesis by what.. a measly 4 million consoles? Yet everybody talks like Super NES was this dominant console. Yet Wii has a 31 million lead, and people seem to talk about it as if it's the Sega 32x.

It doesn't have PS2 like domination.. Well duh, NOTHING will ever again have PS2 like domination. The PS2 not only came out a year earlier, but was spearheaded by the giant known as Sony, had a near monopoly of 3rd party support, and was coming off the heels of the breakout hit console Playstation. Not to undermine its success or anything, just saying, it was a completely different ballgame. Acting like Wii is somehow a failure or less of a success because it did not have near PS2's marketshare is just foolish.

A lot of people here are going to look silly when we get closer to the holidays and Wii starts to get some console movers again.

PS2 peaked at 22.5m in a year (production shipments) and fell to 16m two years after its peak (-6.5m, -29%) Wii peaked at 26m in a year (year ending March 2009) and is trending for 18m in the March 2011 year (-8m, -31%). On a unit basis its a steeper decline than any console but since Wii had a higher peak its largely in line with the PS2 trajectory by percentage. Compare that to any other console, and Wii looks amazing still. PS1 went from 21.6m in its peak year to 9.3m two years later (-57%, - 12.3m). If Sony meets its PSP projection the peak (14.1m) to two years past peak drop 8m (-6.1m, -44%) is much steeper than Wii as well.

Do you guys even look at the facts at all or just spout the latest hooey being passed around like a bad cold?

A lot of people here are going to look silly when we get closer to the holidays and Wii starts to get some console movers again.

Firstly... SNES is classed as a dominant console because of the support it had to go along with the sales. Isn't it? And we rarely ever see anyone try to defend the Wii when it comes to arguements about which console had the best support. The SNES won the generation with the best support out of the two.

Secondly... The PS2 launched a year late on the market, after the Dreamcast. And it's usually the Wii fans who compare the PS2 and Wii, as the Wii is still (I think) tracking above the PS2. We always get comparisons of the 2 consoles. Just rarely in the games... For some reason.

Thirdly... The Wii doesn't have guaranteed  console movers. Donkey Kong/Kirby isn't nowhere near as big as a Pricecut/2D Mario. They aren't even 100% on to sell all that well (when compared to other "major" Nintendo games). DK's highest selling game didn't reach 10 Million units. Since then the series has struggled to reach 5 Million units. Kirby sells even smaller, with an average of about 2 Million units.

Look at PunchOut!!, Wii Music, Animal Crossing Wii for examples. Not all Nintendo software is an ultra high seller. Add in the fact that Nintendo wont be the only company advertising the whole "Family having fun around the TV with simple yet fun Motion control game" thing this Holiday, and you have a potential shock on your hands...

And it only took a pricecut and several AAA games being released inbetween then and now to make the difference so small.

oh those were weekly sales, still though it's a big drop

MH3 came out in Japan, Wii Sports Resort came out in America (and was still selling huge in EU, its second week). The weekly comparisons for software are pretty useless. The software has been pretty weak this year overall though, and with last year's releases it may be tough to keep up, even with the larger install base.

Nintendo singlehandedly carrying the Wii (responsible for nearly all its system sellers) is finally taking its toll, I guess. It's no easy task, after all, Nintendo is the only company that has ever pulled this off so well. This holiday should be fine (for everywhere but maybe EMEAA), though it's hard to tell what's in store for the future. It's really all in Nintendo's hands, as it always has been. They need to create new excitement for the system, somehow.

People expecting Wii to be outsold regularly by PS3 / 360 next year, though? I don't see that happening.

SNES 3rd party support was better, but it was actually very similar to Genesis, as were the sales.

Secondly... The PS2 launched a year late on the market, after the Dreamcast. And it's usually the Wii fans who compare the PS2 and Wii, as the Wii is still (I think) tracking above the PS2. We always get comparisons of the 2 consoles. Just rarely in the games... For some reason.

PS2 has a good 4 years on the Wii, so obviously has the better games. But that said, Wii has many good games as well, for many audiences. Just because you may not be into its library, doesn't mean many others aren't.

I'm not saying they're guaranteed console movers, but they have far more potential than Monster Hunter 3, Galaxy 2, Red Steel 2, and Sin and Punishment did. People love DKC. This game alone can reinvigorate Wii sales. Then there is the wild card, Vitality Sensor, which could be the next Wii Fit. I think a stress relieving video game is an ingenious idea and could be a huge untapped market.
