@forestspirt: you are spot on. If I hear one more person say "x and x game" is a "breakthrough in gaming" due to its "clever plot illiteration" I swear I'll punch someone. Ok it is fantastic that someone has come along and crammed a (not very) literary story into the one place you can no longer avoid it (in your games) but:
1) try reading some real literature before you hail "armored solider kills alien onslaught" as literary genius
2) (in many cases) your game neither enhances the story, nor is enhanced by it having the story, nor does it make up for your game sucks
3) Your game is not art simply for having housed a piece of (in most cases mediocre) art inside of it. Sure a game "can" be art, but story does not make a game art
4) I have run out of other points to rant about but I'm still angry, like there are many other reasons this pisses me off but I can't think of them right now

I don't think anyone has said that a game story has ever been a literary masterpiece. I think when most comment on story it's more about how the story complements and is integrated into the gameplay (your point 2). In many cases this is true, but usually the games that are heralded for story, the game and the gameplay are enhanced by it being there and vice versa.
OT: I think it only appears worse now the internet is so huge and the HD consoles are so close in power. Any slight advantage in one consoles' graphics means a point for one camp. Otherwise, I think for certain genres and games having impressive graphics and technical feats DOES actually enhance the gameplay experience (even if only psychologically).
For example, take Uncharted 2 and the animation system they used. It enhances the gameplay by making it appear more fluid giving the illusion of an improved gameplay mechanic over other 3D platformers or shooters. Or in Mass Effect 2 where the animations are essential to convey the emotions of each character.
It's fine for certain games such as Mario or Zelda where the emphasis is more on the game mechanics, but graphics and art style can do a lot (more than some give them credit for I feel) to enhance those gameplay mechanics.
