Forums - Sales Discussion - Was Blu Ray a mistake?

shams said:

Here is a question for everyone... as we all know, players, videos/discs & TV's are very price sensitive.

Assuming you had both players, would you rather buy a DVD at $9.95US - or the same BluRay movie at $39.95US (or is it $29.95?). What if you knew the movie was *lame*, and you would only watch it once or so (say it was for a friend to watch, or the kids).

I would say at the moment BluRay may have 1% (or less) of the worldwide video disc market (including DVD's & BluRay). Why pay more for the same movie?

My final comment for now - in my recent Asia tour I was *shocked* to see so many people buying / owning VCD movies. Probably 90% of the movies I saw were VCD! How could this be (I asked myself), knowing that the quality SUCKED? The answer - price (plus piracy ;).

If people are still happy to buy/watch VCD's based on price - why would they give a rats ar*e about BluRay, or any other expensive format?

nice bs.

watch a Br movie watch dvd... and find out why they will choose the HD one.

what do 3rd world markets have to do with anything ? of course they buy the crap vcd, look how much money they make.

+ many of these markets piracy is highly accepted and not as contoleed as other nations.

you ever hear of PPV or movies ondemand ? been around for years.

People simple prefer to buy a physical object.

Very true - but the world is changing. Look at iTunes - a few years ago, that would have been impossible to imagine. Now with a new generation of digital online devices, I think you'll see a huge surge in online movies/TV. Internet speed is probably the real limiting factor, and once people get a taste for it - there will be a huge surge towards better broadband (it sucks in particular in Australia - one of the worst modern countries in the world :P).

Ironically, the PS3 could be mainly responsible for driving this growth.

(I admit it will be a while before we watch 30Gig movie streams across the Internet...).

that's a good point. That's why HD-DVD/Blu-Ray isn't taking off right now. People would rather pay 10 bucks for a DVD instead of 30 bucks for the exact same movie on Blu Ray.

 not taking off ?

BR Casino Royal  make it onto Amazons DVD top ten,  set records faster then DVD did.

Br pretty much has already won... 3 streight months it has taken 70% of the market, hddvd 30%

Ok, so using this logic, I guess the Wii has 'pretty much won' ? :D or the xbox? :D

LMFAO ... 360 Wii PS3 PS2... Wii has won what... wii has 70% of the market LOL since when.

hddvd launceh months before BR, Br caught up... and is now out selling then atleast 2-1

More commenting on your '3 months in a row' and ps3 has LESS than 30% of the market, so one can then assume by your comments its lost.

Any of the wars are long from over, statements like yours are pure fanboy crud.

wow... LOL.

Br has world wide majority of the market, wii sure as hell does not.

Where did I say that wii had the majority?, again, using your logic, ps3 has no majority, except apparently some EU places.

Hus, stop calling everyone's statements BS...it is possible for other people to have theories about how the BR/HD-DVD/DVD war will turn out...you need to grow up and be more respectful.

I for one, agree with the idea that not everybody cares about the quality difference between BR and DVD.  "watch a Br movie watch dvd... and find out why they will choose the HD one"...yes, that's why many people choose BR...much better quality.  We all know that.  The fact is not many people yet want to pay more for what they think is a minor increase in quality.  I've seen HD-DVDs, BRs, DVDs...and I can honestly say I'm not yet willing to pay the current prices for any next gen video discs.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Im not actually talking about poor people - Im talking about wealthy people (you should have seen it :P). They still don't care.

And the difference between a BluRay / DVD is irrelevant compared to a VCD / DVD (IMO). I think you need a REAL nice screen to take advantage of BluRay/HD-DVD - and that's just another thing most people will not have. Ive seen BluRay movies. Yes they look nice. Yes they cost 2x as much. And yes, most movies are such CRAP I have no interest in owning them on any format.

Until the price of players come down to something reasonable (something Toshiba is actually make happen with HD-DVD players), BluRay will remain a niche format. Even 60mill players (PS3's) is basically nothing worldwide.

It will be something like this:

40% movies - not worh owning

40% movies - worth owning on VCD

18% movies - worth owning on DVD

2% movies - worth owning on BluRay/HD-DVD

Whether people are either 1) stupid 2) have too much money.. and waste money on BluRay - well that's their problem ;) People waste money on all sorts of things these days.

EDIT - for interest, I have 10 DVD players in my house at the moment. 3 PC's, 2 laptops, 2 DVD players, Xbox, 360, PS2 (this isn't all mine - shared between 4 people). And no BluRay players.

how is that same as the console war ?

 i believe you...but  what countries ?

yes you have 10 dvd players... i have 5... 7 years ago i had 0

time goes a hell of alot more PS3 will sell, people will buy Br palyers, burners... (most computer companys support BR)

like dvd took over from cd, Br will take over from dvd.

my future PC will include BR...

@ shams

I thought there are only movies worth of owning or not. This formats allocation is really funny... Do you really buy crap on VCD?
