Br pretty much has already won... 3 streight months it has taken 70% of the market, hddvd 30%

Ok, so using this logic, I guess the Wii has 'pretty much won' ? :D or the xbox? :D

LMFAO ... 360 Wii PS3 PS2... Wii has won what... wii has 70% of the market LOL since when.

hddvd launceh months before BR, Br caught up... and is now out selling then atleast 2-1

More commenting on your '3 months in a row' and ps3 has LESS than 30% of the market, so one can then assume by your comments its lost.

Any of the wars are long from over, statements like yours are pure fanboy crud.

Number of HD-DVD-players sold all over the world means nothing. Owners just can't buy movies they like. No Casino Royale, no Spider-Man, no Pirates etc. - list is really long. Hardware sale is important but not as a movies.

Isamu does have a point. Xbox 360 is winning by a ratio of 3:1 and Wii at 2:1.

Seems like console sales are different from movie formats. Perhaps due to different markets.

In my eyes, it was definitely a mistake. Without BluRay, PS3 would...:

 i) Be $200 cheaper, with the top model retailing for around $400. 360 or cheaper price. The 360 would struggle to compete against this.

ii)  BluRay was reponsible for delaying the PS3 - for as much as 6 months:

    - this would have (probably) forced the Wii to launch earlier (and be less cool/polished)|
    - the 360 would have 2-3 mill LESS units in the market when the PS3 launched
    - by today, there would be more PS3's on the market, more titles and less 360 exclusives

iii) BluRay was also responsible for reduced production capacity at launch. In addition to launching earlier, these may be an extra 1mill PS3's on the market (say after 1 month from launch).

iv) Nothing stopping Sony from releasing TWO models of PS3 - one with BluRay (later), one without. Most (all?) games would launch on DVD - some would come on 2 or 3 DVD's - or 1 BluRay. No big deal really. They could also release stand-alone BluRay drives.

...

The landscape today would be completely different if Sony took this strategy. There may have been 1-2mill LESS 360's sold - and another 2-3mill (or more?) PS3's sold - putting them almost head-2-head. Sony would be well on the way to trouncing the 360, and turning this into a 2-horse race.

My opinion anyway ;)

nice source, by the way. Getting a quote from a Sony rep. From what I'm reading, Blu Ray is winning by a ratio of 3:1. ::edit:: But, from what I'm reading from that other guy who beat me to the post, its still up in the air.::edit:: At this rate, however, if the success of Blu Ray depends on the sales of PS3, then sony is in a little trouble, considering that PS3 is underperforming.

that brings up an important question, then. What if the hybrid format or the dual players won out?

Why wouldn't they? There are plenty of movies that will *never* come out on BluRay - just as movies won't arrive on HD-DVD. If I was going to buy a player, I would make sure it played both.

Within 2-3 years downloadable movies will be popular anyway - and then who knows what will happen to disc based formats.

Planty of movies? Universal has 9.2% of the market.

you ever hear of PPV or movies ondemand ? been around for years.

People simple prefer to buy a physical object.

Here is a question for everyone... as we all know, players, videos/discs & TV's are very price sensitive.

Assuming you had both players, would you rather buy a DVD at $9.95US - or the same BluRay movie at $39.95US (or is it $29.95?). What if you knew the movie was *lame*, and you would only watch it once or so (say it was for a friend to watch, or the kids).

I would say at the moment BluRay may have 1% (or less) of the worldwide video disc market (including DVD's & BluRay). Why pay more for the same movie?

My final comment for now - in my recent Asia tour I was *shocked* to see so many people buying / owning VCD movies. Probably 90% of the movies I saw were VCD! How could this be (I asked myself), knowing that the quality SUCKED? The answer - price (plus piracy ;).

If people are still happy to buy/watch VCD's based on price - why would they give a rats ar*e about BluRay, or any other expensive format?

that's a good point. That's why HD-DVD/Blu-Ray isn't taking off right now. People would rather pay 10 bucks for a DVD instead of 30 bucks for the exact same movie on Blu Ray.

However, Blu-Ray/HD-DVD will eventually catch on and will get as cheap as 10 dollars once the players reach a mass market price (~100-200 dollars)
