Was Blu Ray a mistake?

that's a good point. That's why HD-DVD/Blu-Ray isn't taking off right now. People would rather pay 10 bucks for a DVD instead of 30 bucks for the exact same movie on Blu Ray.

 

However, Blu-Ray/HD-DVD will eventually catch on and will get as cheap as 10 dollars once the players reach a mass market price (~100-200 dollars)
