Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Had Sony released a PS3 with just a standard DVD player, would it be doing better? They could have launched a Premium version at 600, and then the non-Blu Ray version at 400

Short run probably, long run probably not.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

So, Hus, since you're the resident Sony Respresentative, do you think the PS3 could have done better?

What would you have done different to launch the PS3? Or would you not have changed anything and its fine the way it is?

Hus has good points but they are often lost in his attitude and typing skills. I think launching with blu-ray was a brilliant way to win the format war, so it makes sense. As a gamer I am happy with the console's quality of design and I'll enjoy games on 1 disc that would take 3 DVDs very soon. Is that worth the extra money? Maybe not right now, but having a blu-ray player later will be nice and I think the games will be better for it. I'd like to correct some price quotes here, though. Looking at Casino Royale, the DVD is $16 and the Blu-ray is $27. Clearly, a lot of people bought it because it was in the top 10 on amazon at one point, and sold 100,000 copies sooner than any DVD movie did when launch dates are lined up. Looks like with The Curse of the Black Pearl the blu-ray is $24 and the DVD, a 3-disc special edition, costs $22. The 2-disc DVD is $14. That's a $2 difference in the 2 versions that have almost the same material. The blu-ray version has more than the special edition. Dead Man's Chest is...oh man, this is great...$19 for DVD, $24 for Blu-ray, but $25 if you want the collector's edition DVD version. In case you couldn't guess, the blu-ray version contains the collector's edition material and more. It seems to be cheaper than the DVD version. That surprised me. Those were on Amazon.com, in case you were wondering. The point is the price difference is dropping, and apparently for some movies it is actually cheaper to get the blu-ray version. I believe the black pearl may have been the same way had the DVDs weren't a few years older.

I do not think it was a mistake and I think that the PS3 is probably performing better than they expected because most companies plan for worst case scenario. Believe it or not video game consoles always seem to have the latest tech in them so I am actually glad that the PS3 shipped with blu ray because it is there for devs to take advantage of and I want to see what the best and brightest will do with the space (if they choose to use it).

Usually consoles dont have the latest tech, it only looks like it with custom made chipsets etc. Usually they are based on more like what is the "most", not on what is the "best". PS3 is an exeption for this, with its Power-PC based Cell (arguable) and BD-drive. Looking at PS3s specs and how Cell can be used in PS3, its possible (i think more propable) that delays have been caused by Cell. And after they got Cells quality good enough (meaning, cost of delay would have had more effect, than cost of low quality), they mismanaged to raise the BD production (quality issues again). For Sony, it was not a bad decision to add BD to PS3, but for PS3s success it propably was.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

The PS2 was released at a time when people were trying to get into DVD's and Sony played up to that and released their new console with a built in DVD player....remember it was expensive at the time as well and was much more expensive than the comparable systems on the market at the time.

Sony are trying to do the same with the PS3 including the BR player, but the main difference is that noone has a BR player at the moment and it's still a product in its infancy.

Sales of LCD's and Plasma's are up people are getting caught up in the Digital TV signals as well as HD, again in it's infancy...but this WILL change.  I can see people buying a PS3 to get the BR player especially if the PS3 drops $100 in price come this Xmas or soon after.

BR seems to be the most popular of the 2 HD formats at the moment, but neither will really take off until it becomes more affordable.  2008 will be the year for BR and the PS3.  I reckon the PS3 is a year or 2 too early...but it has the hardware and potential to be around for 10 years or so though.
